starting kettlebell workouts

Cathlete
I would like to try kettlebell workouts. I am an advanced Cathe exerciser.

What pound weight do you think I should buy? I will not have the money to buy a starter weight and then something I move up to. Reading other threads is making me think I should get a 20.

What dvd would you recommend?

Anything else I should know?

Thank you!

It's hard to say. I started with a 15 but quickly purchased a 20. Some start with a 10 and find it to be plenty for a while. I think the general rec for a woman who exercises regularly is 18 pounds though.

Wendy is right about the size recommendation. You may find some moves like the turkish get up are better done without a bell at first. Or you could use a lighter dumbell till your progress to the wt that your bell is.

As far as DVDs are concerned. I really like Lauren Brooks as a beginners. I've heard good stuff about Lisa Schafer too. I would recommend a session or two with a RKC if possible to get your form down first.

Have fun!!

I started with 15# (no 18# in stores), and I felt that was a good weight , thought I had to use a light dumbell (or NO weight) for TGU's at first, and the weight quickly got too-light for swings unless I do high-rep sets.

If you can't find an RKC close to you to take a workshop (that would be ideal before even buying a bell, so you can try different weights out and see what works best for you), this new DVD is an excellent work-along training session: http://nofearfitness.com/products/index.php . I've been doing KB's sporadically for about a year, but I still picked this up because I want to go over the basics more thoroughly and get back into it. The price is also excellent for a KB DVD (which, with the exception of Iron Core workouts, are usually pretty pricey).
