Spray-On Tanning (professionally done)

I am considering having this done for the cruise I'm going on next month. Has anyone had it done? Does it look decent? How long does it typically last? And will it come off on my clothes?

TIA for any suggestions!

I've done it several times. Mystic tan is great. You go into a booth similar to a shower. They give you cream to protect your palms, bottoms of your feet, elbows and knees. You go in the booth and it sprays you, you turn and it sprays again. It goes on very evenly and looks natural. You can buy lotion that makes it last longer. It lasts around 5 days but by purchasing some self tanning stuff that they have you can extend it. I am VERY white and this is what I do if I'm going on a cruise or going ANYWHERE in a bathing suit. It gives me confidence and is definitely worth the $

Different opinion- I hated it. I more hated the process of being sprayed by the machine than anything. I thought it was awful. It was cold I couldn't breath without breathing in the stuff-yuk!! The tan was ok. Not terribly even esp when you looked at it in natural sun light. I am very picky btw. I would rather have someone hand spray me. The other thing to keep in mind is 1) you still have to wear sunblock-this doesn't protect you from burning (you probably already know that) 2) it won't last near as long if you are sweating, swimming, showering more than usual. The stuff always comes off on my clothing- so do not wear white!! Sorry, just wanted you to get the other side. You may love it, I just didn't

I also didn't like it- I think it made me smell funny & not in a good way! ;-) I agree with Catherine, it also came off on my clothes some and they say you aren't supposed to shower for about 4 hours after having it done...let me tell you by the time 4 hours was up I couldn't stand the smell anymore & I felt sticky the whole time. Even after I showered I could still smell that horrid smell. x(

I hate to beat a dead horse but I also did not care for the mystic tan. I've only had it done once and it's been several years but it was pretty much the way the others described. The first day or two it looked okay, by the third day my feet were splotchy along with my legs.

I didn't do all the maintenance afterward like the lotion extender and stuff. I just felt it was more money than I cared to spend for results that didn't last very long.

I would like to try the hand spray on version sometime.

I have had the professional spray tan done where you get buck naked and stand in front of someone who sprays you up and down. It was hysterical! Especially when she tells you to open your legs and bend over so she can get the "smiley face" area (under your butt cheeks....). It was the weirdest, funniest, most awkward experience of my life. I was sooooo sticky afterwards and it came off on my clothes for days. (It doesn't stain, though--washes right out in the washing machine). The first shower you take is nasty when all the gunk is coming off--kind of like the first time you wash your hair after you've dyed it.

I will probably never do it again. It was expensive and the tan faded unevenly (not to mention it doesn't last longer than a week). My hands and the bottoms of my feet were so gross too. Ick.

So, anyhoo, that's my experience with spray on tan. It may be different for you though. On the positive side, I was not orange AT ALL. It actually looked pretty awesome for the first two or three days. I think it's worth it to do if you're going on a cruise and want to have that "base color". Just don't forget to wear sunscreen.

Have fun on your cruise!

Thanks, everyone! I think I'm going to avoid the spray-on then. Although I wouldn't normally "fake bake," I might do it for this one-time only. My sister's getting married, and I don't want to look like Casper in the photos.

Ok, one more vote against Mystic. It was very expensive, and the first time it only took on my face, hands, and the bottom of my feet! And I slathered that barrier creme on my hands and feet! I hated inhaling the stuff, too. I can't hold my breath for 2 min.! I prefer self tanner. The only plus about Mystic for me was that it got my back.(after 3 times in the booth). I have a good friend that absolutely loves it, though. Everyone is different!!

I had it done about a month ago and LOVED it. A woman professionally sprayed me and it was definitely worth it. I had 2 treatments 2 days apart I think. I am 52 and after the spray tan looked about 37! I am Italian so maybe that helps in terms of skin type. I used the tan extender lotion and I think that helped. The tan lasted about 2 weeks...used a tinted tanning lotion for upkeep. Just remember to always use sunscreen! YOu do feel a little sticky afterwards but just wear a smock like dress afterwards and you'll be comfy and forgo a bra for the day if you can. Try not to shower for a day or 2, that helps. I highly recommend and will do again. I also received many compliments on how good I looked!Try it, you'll like it!

Lisa, I'm glad you had a good experience...I have decided, though, to go with the traditional tanning method - something I wouldn't normally do but I'm making a one-time exception for the wedding.

No worries about me using sunscreen. I use SPF 50!
