Spranged Ankle

Two months ago on November 1st I fell and spranged my ankle and haven't exercised since. For about 3 weeks it was hard for me to walk or stand on it. It is better now but there is still a little bit of swelling and just a little bit of pain. I heard that a spranged ankle is worse than a broken ankle because it takes a spranged ankle a long time to heal. Someone told me it will take about 1 year before my ankle gets back down to its normal size and I don't want to wait a whole year before I can exercise. My question is that I want to start back exercising and I know I can't do any step aerobics. Would it be okay if I just did a walking workout which probably wouldn't put too much pressure on my ankle? I do have a few of Karen Voight "Sleek Essentials" which could probably work. I also have Cathe Weight workouts which I probably would have to eliminate squats or lunges. Does anyone have any suggestions or would this be okay?

I am sorry you hurt your ankle. I do hope you feel better soon! I wuold suggest you talk to a doctor regarding what is okay and what is not as you don't want to delay your healing. I think it might be a bit different for everyone what they can tolerate when healing from such an injury. I'm sure you know to start back nice and slow, though. Good luck.

My first thought was did you see a medical professional? Then they should tell you what is appropriate. If you didn't and you are still swollen 3 months later see one!! A sprain can be bad and it depends on the degree of sprain as to how long it takes to heal. Please get this checked out.

Kimberly,
I did the same thing a few years ago and boy did that take forever to fully heal. I started walking on it(carefully) after a week or so in crutches. I made sure I kept the joint from getting stiff by "drawing" the alphabet with my foot 3 or 4 times a day being careful not to do too much. As soon as I felt stronger, I started with weight training and small bouts of aerobics (walking on an incline on a treadmill or eliptical). I didn't really do floor aerobics for a little over 2 months until the joint felt strong. That being said, I was under the care of my husband (a PT) and that was important. Make sure you're seeing a medical professional before you start exercising on it. You don't want to re-injure yourself!!

Kimberly~I'm so sorry to hear of your injury. How frustrating it has to be for you. I have also heard that sometimes a sprain can be worse then a break! I agree that you should see what the doc says but in the meantime, keep working your UB/ABS and I would imagine you could do lying floor work such as inner thigh lifts, outer thigh and even all 4's! Keep us posted and best wishes for a quick(er) recovery!!!

I agree with others that if you haven't seen a doctor about this yet, you need to. Maybe you sprained your ankle, or maybe it's something else. A doctor can give you advice to help you get 'back on your feet' faster.

Hi Kimberly,

Definitely see a doc if you haven't already. I sprained my ankle badly about 10 years ago, and I was pretty much back to normal within 3-4 months (maybe a little less) and it was DEFINITELY back to its normal size by then. I was also walking on it without much trouble after a week or two.

A few years ago I sprained my ankle. And by sprained, I mean tore every ligament and tendon in it while tumbling at the gym. It was black, literally.

However, I was back tumbling on it at 6 weeks (with it taped). But I had no discomfort or swelling. At the time my doctor told me that was the most severe sprain that you could possibly have.

So with that said, if you are still swollen at 8 weeks, I would suggest seeing a doctor. Sprains vary in the time they take to heel, but 2 months is a long time for even a severe sprain to be swollen and painful.

Could it be that you just don't trust it yet? I definitely had that issue with mine, where I wasn't confident to put it back to work. But your body is amazing... and it will definitely tell you when enough is enough.

I went to my doctor the day I sprained my ankle and he told me to keep it wrapped, elevated, and put ice (the first few days) and then heat wrap on it. My doctor said it would take a while for the swelling to go down. My ankle turned black too. I guess I am afraid I might re-injur my ankle. I guess I could do upper body workout and abs but I will call my doctor to give him an update and see if it's okay to start back exercising. Of course I will start back slow. Thanks to everyone for all your advice. Hopefully I will be back into my routine shortly.
