Spinervals - Which ones to get?

A friend lent me a couple Spinerval tapes to try: Technique and Recovery and Mental Toughness. I did about 30 minutes this morning of Mental Toughness as I have a 60 mile ride tomorrow and didn't want my legs cooked for it. Think they will be really good for me. I'll probably only be able to do them when my DH isn't home as I work out in the morning and don't want the trainer (old wind trainer) to wake hime. Can anyone suggest some must have ones? I'd prefer the DVD's of course.

My favorites are Have Mercy, No Slackers and Lean & Mean, but they are all great! The only one that I haven't liked so far is Sprinting Machine - I think that's what it's called. I've only done that one once - it's just not for me.

Do you mean a trainer or a spinning bike?

I can't remember where I got my spinning bike from, but I can get the info for you if you need it. Mine (V-Bike_ was around $725 and I bought it a few years ago. Since then, more spinning bikes have come out and I think you can get a good one at a lower price.

That's not too bad. After a long haitus from working out, I have suddenly jumped back into the swing of things. I have a workout area now and I just asked hubby to put his weight system in there and I'd love either an elliptical or bike. (Sorry for sounding dumb but is a spinner the same as a bike.) I keep seeing this white bike that people are bent over, riding. The movement looks similar to what Lance Armstrong does.

hi jeanette!

the newer spinervals are good too! they have music off options etc... actually... all of them are... uhm... "good" lol! evil coach troy... i curse him out as much (ok.. more than) i curse out cathe!!!!

we just read the descriptions for what they worked on (i.e. recovery and TECHNIQUE whihch you have/tried) or hill climbing... i guess bending crank arms is a doozy! we have about 10 or 12 but i've only done a couple of them cuz i hate my trainer (

sure is a good thing i live in the desert! lol!

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

I love my spinervals!! Toughest workouts i own.
I have a johnny g spin pro bike which i also love (but then, it's the only one i ever used...)

My favorites, in order most to least:

Big Gear Strength, No slackers, Time Trial special, Mental toughness, suffer o rama. I have a few more: Totally time trial, ride and stride, zoot challenge, that i like, but don't reach for them as often.

Good luck, have fun!!

A spinning bike is different than a regular bike because you can stand and pedal on it. It's probably built more like a road bike also - I don't really know all the differences.

Spinning is a great, nonimpact workout - perfect for crosstraining or if you're recovering from an injury.

Thanks for ideas on new ones to get. Also, do they have premixes for days when you don't want to sit on the bike for an hour or more? I'm so spoiled with Cathe's DVD's. Are they all like Mental Toughness where he tells you what gear to put it in and then you pedal for so long, back off, go again, back off, etc?

Christi, I don't have a spin bike, just a regular road bike hooked up to a wind trainer (attaches to the back hub of the bike). Someone gave it to me a few years ago so I'll stay with it. Surely made it better having a fan on me and water bottle handy too. Also, the towel is a must. Come to think of it, I needed a cloth to keep the sweat from dripping in my eyes and stinging too. I'll have that next time.

My cycling friends (much stronger riders than myself) swear by using these thru the winter when you can't get outside up here in the cold winter.

Also, does anyone use a HRM for these workouts?

Jeanette

Yes, I have the Iron Girl. It's OK. Very fast paced, and that makes it harder. Definitely a well rounded workout, but not a substitute for heavy lifting. Come to think of it, I may just do that this morning... hmmmm... :) Mari

Thanks Mari! I'm still on the fence about ordering this one. Just one more question:) Does the weight work seem balanced w/ upper and lower body? I am trying to do more circuit & high rep weight workouts. I have been very time challenged lately, so I try to squeeze alot in, in an hour or so.
TIA

It seems that it is 8 min bike followed by 1 or 2 min core, then 8 min bike again and 1 or 2 min upperbody moves. Then another 8 min bike and 1 min lunges. At the end he does the weights in a row, no biking in between. So it is light weights w/ high reps but I could do heavy w/ lower -- I suppose -- if I wanted. Actually I ended up doing Beach Body today, so this format is just how I remember. But it is very close.
It is a very balanced workout, you get lower/upper and abs as well within an hour. About 40 min biking and 20 min weights. Mari

Jeanette,
There are short (VERY short) clips at the spinerval website. There also is a page where the w/o are grouped according to its main focus (endurance, strength, etc). There are some good reviews at the video fitness website. Also , if you do a search over there, you will probably get a bunch of threads to look at. The production is not as good in the older ones, but the w/o are so intense ,I never notice.;) Nashbar, cyclefix and performance usually have them cheaper and often have sales. That's when I stock up on the ones I don't have. Good luck . Marnie

Thanks so much, again, for the suggestions. I'll go to the Spinervals website and look at some clips.
