spin bikes

I remember a while back that there was a discussion about spin bikes, and which ones everyone liked best. I am thinking about purchasing one for my home gym. I'm looking at either the Schwinn Evolution or the Star Trac series. Anyone familiar, or anybody remember where that post was? Thanks! Also, for anyone who has done home spin workouts, what dvd's or workouts do you use? CArdioCoach?

I've been thinking about this myself. I was between the Star Trac and the Rev Master. The woman who owns the studio where I ride steered me away from the Schwinn because she said they need more tweeking and upkeeping than the other two over time. I don't know if this is true as I do not own one or even been on one, but I thought I would pass the info along to you.

I have been on both the Star Trac and the Rev Master. I thought they were comparable. The Rev Master seems to be a bit more expensive (about $200 more). The Rev Master comes with a cool moniter that can tell you RPM and calories burned and all kinds of stuff, but it's an additional $150 for that. Also, the newer Spinnervals DVD's are done on the RevMaster.

There are lots of threads on this, so if you don't get the responses you want here, do some searching.

I have not bought one yet.

There is an indoor heartrate cycling book by Sally Edwards that gives all kinds of "profiles" for different rides. If you ever thought you could ride with a heartrate moniter to guide you, you may like that. Otherwise, I know there are Spinnervals and Mindy Mylrea has a DVD out. You can also go to www.pedal-on.com for an indoor cycling website. I saw a post that described some other DVD's I had not heard of.

Good luck!

Janet, I don't own a spin bike, but I started taking a twice-weekly spin class about two months ago at a fitness center near me, and they SWEAR by the Schwinns. That's the bike (of course) that I use in the class, and it really seems simple and pretty tweak-free to me. Very intuitive controls, good smooth flywheel tension adjustments, easy adjusting of handlebars, seat height, seat distance from handlebars, etc. And I know these bikes must take a beating.

When I was thinking about buying a spin bike last year I looked at the Revmaster and Star Trac, and liked them both with a slight preference for the Star Trac. Then I figured maybe I should actually TAKE spinning for a while before committing to that equipment, duh! Now if I were to buy one, the Schwinn would be at the top of my list. I'd go back and look at the others too, but it'd be hard to beat the Schwinn.

Hope you find something you love -- and I think Cardio Coach on a spin bike would be an awesome idea!!!!! :) :)

Thanks so much for all of your replies. I appreciate the time you took to give me your insights. I did look at the RevMaster last summer, but it looked so different from the Schwinn Evolutions that they use at my gym. It was pricey too. The Johnny G bikes (Star Trac) unfortunately have to be purchased off of the internet, either factory direct or from the spinning.com website. I would prefer to buy it from a store, like the Schwinn. Oh well...we'll see. Thanks again. IF anybody did buy a Star Trac, just curious, how was the customer service? did it ever need any repair.

I bought a Johnny G Star Trac a couple of years ago through Sports Authority online. It did ship from the factory . . . in a ginormous box with some assembly required (no rocket science required to put it together though!!) I use it 2-3 times a week and have never had a lick of problem with the bike. It also came with a box of spare parts (an extra seat and some other widgets). I can't remember exactly what's in the box as I haven't needed to replace anything yet! It is a great bike and I enjoy it immensely.
