Speaking of rest...I think I'm injured :(

Yesterday I tried Drill Max for the first time and I did the cardio blast premix. While I was doing one of the segments I heard something pop in my back, but I felt no pain so I continued with the workout until the end, then I trained my legs and then when I tried ab work I just couldn't handle the pain in my lower back, especially the coccyx (aka tailbone). I had to stop immediately, do some stretching, take a shower, and go to bed. Today the pain was bad because I'm sitting pretty much all day, but it was worse if I tried to pick up something from the floor, or if I tried to do something that required bending my back. I'm stubborn so I still tried to exercise. I had kick max (segments 1 and 2) scheduled for today with some upper body weight work. I could finish segment 1 with modifications, but when it came time for the blasts I just couldn't do them. I had to stop (I didn't even do the upper body workout), stretch and here I am posting and not knowing if I'm going to be able to exercise tomorrow. It's a bummer that this is happening now when lot of doctors (including mine) are away for the Holidays until Jan 2nd. What to do what to do... I don't even know if this is serious enough for an emergency room visit which is my only option at this time. Weird. What do you think I should do? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I popped my back out in September doing Circuit Max. Like you, I tried to ignore it, finished the workout, took a shower, sat down and could hardly get back up. I went back and forth, should I see my doctor, or a chiropractor. I went with the Chiropractor. It was my first time and it really helped. I had to go 4 days in a row, but by the end of the fourth day, I felt great. It was really funny, he took some x-rays and put his hands on the exact spot that was hurting. If you have coverage, give it a try... If not try one of those "pain wraps" for the back. Take some aleve or Ibuprophen and rest until you can get into the doc.

You need to check with a doctor. You may a ruptured a disc. Don't even think of working out until you have this checked. Your doctor should have someone covering for him, so you shouldn't have to visit the er.

Thanks for your replies. I took Anaprox for the pain which is pretty much the same as Aleve, but stronger. If I wake up like this tomorrow then I'll have to get this checked out by a doctor. I've taken so many rest days lately (due to work, the flu, etc.) and it's frustrating taking a few more rest days, but I'll do whatever it takes to get better. Hopefully I'll wake up a lot better tomorrow.

I agree with Robin call your dr in am. Another alternative to the ER is a walk-in clinic. That should be cheaper than an ER visit. Do you have any of those around where you live?

Please seek medical attention if you have the following signs and symptoms as soon as you can as they could be signs of a serious problem:

When To Call a Doctor
Give your low back pain a day or two to work itself out before you call your doctor, unless you have signs of a severe illness, injury, or heart attack, as described below.

Call 911 or other emergency services immediately if:

You have back pain with chest pain. Always call 911 any time you think you might have symptoms of a heart attack. Symptoms of a heart attack can include:
Pain in the upper back with chest pain or discomfort that is crushing or squeezing or feels like a heavy weight on the chest.
Chest pain with:
Sweating.
Shortness of breath.
Nausea or vomiting.
Pain that spreads from the chest to the back, neck, or jaw or one or both shoulders or arms.
Dizziness or lightheadedness.
A fast or irregular pulse.
Fever.
You had a severe injury to your back. Signs of spinal injury include:
New loss of bowel or bladder control.
New weakness in the legs.
New numbness or tingling in the buttocks, genital area, or legs.
Moderate to severe pain following an injury to the back.

Hey ladies! I woke up a lot better this morning. I think the Anaprox I took helped me a lot and I also used an icy/hot type product and gave myself a deep tissue massage before I went to bed. So I saved the $$$ from the doctor I guess. I worked out today, but I did a lot of modifications because I can't say that the pain is 100% gone (I didn't do crazy high impact moves, went light with the weights, etc.) at least I can bend, sit down, stand up, drive, and do all those normal activities that we take for granted. I will take two full days of rest due to the holidays. I'm getting my hair done in a couple of minutes and I don't want to mess it up with sweat. :D I'll be back with my workouts on Monday evening so I think that will help me recover even more. Anywho I'll be careful when starting new workouts the next time around. Happy Holidays to all of you!

If you are concerned about it, then please go to the emergency room. If you think you can handle it, then, stay still, calm down, and watch movies as best as you can. It may take awhile, but find a position you can tollerate. Take bath soaks, they are wonderful, they help keep weight off your back. Expect 3 full days of pain, but then after that it does get better. If not, you need to see someone. If you have pain medication, then take some. That helps a lot also. I took only 1/8 of a tablet and was OK with that.

I've just now recovered from my muscle pain, and I think I need to stretch (after a warm up) do exercises carefully and then stretch more. More than Cathe, just add on to hers, both in the beginning and end. It's so frustrating I know. I don't know how else to prevent these things from happening. It just happens so quickly.

Get well, and have a great Holiday,

Janie
