Speaking of Harry Potter - speculate

DH and I went to see OOTP last night - which I really liked as far as character development - in spite of the things they left out.

But we were talking about what to expect for Saturday. DH has long maintained the Voldemort's mole at Hogwarts is McGonagall - which I know would totally blow many of us away. But on the issue of the possible death of Harry...

I know many of you have STUDIED these books from a novelistic and developmental approach, but let me throw this out - from a much form elementary angle. Do you think there was a discussion between JK Rowling and her publishers about killing off Harry? I mean there are SO MANY children and young readers who have really taken to these books, but have not yet experienced death? DH thinks that killing off Harry and having THAT be the first experience about death might be quite traumatic for many of her readers. (Granted, there has already been Sirius, Cedric, and Dumbledore, so I don't know if I've even reconciled this concept myself).

And I know it makes no sense to speculate - less than a week (yay!)to go. Just wondering if you all think that these kinds of discussions are held (i.e. between author and publishing reps) or do you think the author just follows the storyline (s)he comes up with? Do you think Rowling would stop to have thought - "how many children will I devastate if I kill off Harry?" Just curious on others' thoughts.

Children devastated??? *I* will be devastated!!!!!!!

I've read a lot of articles on why she should NOT kill Harry and they made sense to me. I saw OOP last night and wondered if Harry must die. I also read a spoiler that announced who would die. (not Harry)Just from a financial standpoint it would be ridiculous to have Harry die never mind how her readers would feel.I will wait until Saturday to find out! I plan on reading all day.

Hi,

You know, I'm new to the Harry Potter series...I happened upon one of the shows a few months back and was drawn into it and loved it. I went to see the new movie last week and I just really am interested in it. I hate the thought than any of them (other than the bad guy of course) will meet their end when the series is finished...it's very sad!

Did I read correctly about the author though? That when she started this series that she was a single parent and broke? I seem to recall something along those lines.

I have not read any previous posts.

My husband, who has read all of the books, thinks Hermine will be killed off. I truly hope HP is not killed off for the same reason you mentioned - child devasastation.

I think Ron and or Hermione will be killed, as Rowlings has stated that 2 major characters are killed in this last book. I also feel it would be a waste for the series to have Harry killed at the end, I don't think anything less than a triumph of good over evil will suffice to make this wonderful series of books readable for our grandchildren, and their grandchildren. I don't see these books becoming the classics they deserve to be unless you have and ending that satisfies the reader.

I also think Neville will be a prominent figure in the last book, as his character is the one that most closely parallels Harry's own situation, and he is getting stronger as time goes on.

My DS wants Harry to find a long lost member of his family to live with at the end, that he should find that kind of happiness...

Have you noticed the almost sympathetic attitude that Aunt Petunia seems to have come up with as these stories unfold???? I wonder if the Durdsleys might not be a part of this great finale also...

"I don't see these books becoming the classics they deserve to be unless you have and ending that satisfies the reader."

I disagree...some of the greatest works of literature were written, not to please an audience or to satisfy a reader, but because of the writer's vision and imagination ONLY.

Well put, you have a valid point. I still feel, however, that if Harry dies an important element of the series as a whole will not be as meaningful.

Just be careful with any spoilers on this forum, okay? It'll be a while before I can read the book.

(I don't know how I'm going to avoid finding out if Harry dies or not, though. Yikes.)
