Soy Milk vs. Cow's Milk

Carole is right, it tastes delicious and comes in vanilla, plain, and chocolate. I think there is a "very vanilla" flavor now, too. I wouldn't say it tastes the same as cow's milk. Silk does have the same type of consistency, though, which I found to be more important. It's not chalky, and there's no weird aftertaste. I don't drink the chocolate flavor, but if you like things that taste very chocolate-y, definitely try it. They make smaller single serving bottles now that you can pick up at Whole Foods. Try it!!

Ooh- speaking of chocolate, Tofutti fudge bars are great! They are like 30 or so calories, dairy free, and yummy when you are craving chocolate!

I drink only soy milk. I love it. I do it for health, for animals and now, for taste.

The main reason I wanted to post here is that at Christmas time, Silk also comes in Egg Nog flavor. Delicious!!

But the one I use regularly is Silk Unsweetened. It's kinda new and comes in a dark green carton. To my knowledge it comes in:

Regular, Enhanced (extra calcium and B-12), Unsweetened, Vanilla, "Very Vanilla", Chocolate, Chai, Latte and Egg Nog.

Yes, it does Nancy (Hi, by the way!).

Reading from my unsweetened Silk it has, in 8 oz.

80 calories (and it is just as rich and creamy as regular, just no sugar added)

4 g fat (0.5 g saturated fat)
4 g carbs
1 g fiber
7 g protein
10% of USDA Vitamin A
30% of USDA Calcium (I wish I knew what this means in mg, but you probably do)
30% vitamin D
and other stuff I am too lazy to type.

In the ingredient list, it has calcium carbonate, so they are apparently adding some.

Hi Liane!

I wonder if all of the calcium comes from the calcium carbonate? Does soy have it's own natural calcium? If so, I may switch to soy milk because of what I'm reading here. Sounds like there are many health benefits! (As for taste, I rarely dislike the taste of anything eatable. :D )

Hi Nancy!

Some potentially useful info from the Soyfoods Association of North America:

“How does soymilk compare with cow's milk?

Numerous fortified soymilks on the market today contain nutrients in level's similar to cow's milk and are good sources of calcium, vitamin A, riboflavin and phosphorus, as well as many other vitamins and minerals. Most soymilks are fortified with 300-400 milligrams of calcium, 120 IU of vitamin D, 500 mg vitamin A and 3 micrograms vitamin B12 per 8 ounces. Soymilk contains no cholesterol and is low in saturated fat.

Does the calcium absorption differ between soymilk and cow's milk?
While the bioavailability of calcium in soymilk may be slightly less that cow's milk, soymilk is still a significant source of calcium in the diet. In addition, studies have found that in comparison with animal protein, soy protein decreases calcium excretion, presumably due to the lower sulfur amino acid content of soy protein. Consequently, a soy-based diet is able to maintain calcium balance with a lower calcium intake.”

Also, I check the Silk site (http://www.silkissoy.com) and found that they do use calcium carbonate, not calcium chelate:

“Calcium carbonate is a type of calcium that is a naturally occurring mineral found in limestone. We use Calcium Carbonate in our products because it does not adversely interact with other Silk ingredients and has a high bioavailability of calcium. There are 300 mg per 8 oz. serving of Silk Soymilk or 30% of the recommended RDA.

Calcium Chelate is a type of calcium that is surrounded, or protected, by an amino acid. The amino acid protects the calcium from inhibitors like oxalic acid or phytic acid and allows for an improvement in absorption of about 5-10%. It works well as a supplement in pill form and is an option for consumers, but is not stable under processing conditions and is not an option as an ingredient for Silk.”

HTH!

Liane! Good to see you- was thinking about you the other day. Haven't seen your posts in a while. Glad you're here!

Thank you Gina. It feels good to hear that. I'll be checking in more often. I'm still working out, that's for sure!

Liane

Missed you too Liane! Nice to see you back.

Thank you, Gina. Very interesting!

I'm getting confused with all the different sources of calcium. My nutritionist has me taking calcium citrate malate, which she says is the best. I guess the key is how easily absorbed it is.

I have one cup of skim milk each day in my morning oatmeal. I think I'm going to try using soy milk instead for a while.

Oh, my goodness, Liane while you were gone I pulled out way ahead of you!! I just broke 2000 posts!! }( }( You better get cracking, lady. :D

I feel soooo ashamed. Oh my God. Look at my pathetic number of posts. But, wait, what's that music I hear in the background.

It's Gloria Gaynor.

"Did I crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I. I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to post I know I'll stay alive;
I've got all my life to live,
I've got all my amazing wisdom to give and I'll survive,
I will survive. Hey hey. "

:p

At first I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never post
without Liane's thorns in my side
But then I spent so many nights
thinking how she posted more
And I grew strong
And I learned how to post alot
and so she's back
from North Carolina
I just walked in to find her here
posting in my space.....

Ooops, apologies for trying to sing here....a few too many glasses of wine I'm afraid... :D
