Since this is your first child, it is hard to say how your body will react to exercise. Some women do have to take it easy, but I think that most of us do just fine listening to our bodies and going from there.

Could you call your ob or ask his/her advice nurse their opinion?

I've exercised pretty hard during the first trimester with all of mine (I'm expecting #6), but I do not have any history of miscarraige.

I hate to tell you one way or the other, just that most women do fine listening to their bodies.

Also, I'm not sure how much exercise would contribute to miscarraige anyway--sometimes it might be a factor, sometimes not.

I hope Autumn replies to you, because she knows alot about this stuff.

Keep us posted

Maggie:)

Stacy,

No need to apologize to us. :)

First let me say that you should call your doctor, since he or she is familiar with your history. There are contraindications to exercise, which you can review in the BJSM article found in my signature.

Assuming you are a healthy mom-to-be with no known contraindications... there is no scientific evidence to even suggest that exercise causes first trimester pregnancy lost. I am reviewing my copy of Clincial Gynecology, Endocrinology, & Fertility by Speroff, Glass, & Kase that supports this. Sheila Watkins, our fitness expert posted this, "In fact, there has never been any research to support the hypothesis that any exercise can cause miscarriage" http://69.0.137.118/dc/dcboard.php?...12277&mesg_id=12277&listing_type=search#12288.
Let me add that nearly 70% of first-trimester miscarriages are related to genetic factors.

Maggie gave you some good advice about listening to your body. :) You may not feel like exercising.

Take care!

Stacy,

Another thing to consider is that if it were so easy for exercise (or anything else, for that matter) to cause miscarriages, we would not need abortion clinics or morning after pills. Plus, many women with unplanned pregnancies continue to exercise at their regular intensity for weeks into their first trimesters, because they don't know they're pregnant. I've found, personally, that the majority of the population, doctors included, can't seem to wrap their minds around the concept of pregnant women exercising, and will generally advise you to stop. Of course, there is tons of great research coming out that extols the positive results of exercising while pregnant. As long as you listen to your body, and lower your expectations about your energy levels for exercise, you should be just fine. Of course, talk to your doctor about your activity levels, and whether you have special circumstances that warrant more caution. But if all is well, just take it at a pace and a level that you feel comfortable doing.

Cheers,
Sandra

I was going to add a little here. I hope it doesn't sound insensitive. It seems that if a baby is miscarried there is really little that can be done to prevent it. It just happens, sadly enough.
I did as much as I could, whenever I can. I still do. Many times this includes 2-3 naps/week. I listen to my body, and rarely push myself when pg.
Congrats on your pregnancy!!!
