Soap nuts

Hi,

I like natural products that do not contain ingredients that strip our hair and skin of the natural oils. That is one reason that I have been making my own cold processed soap for 15 years now.

I recently started using soap nuts to make a liquid cleaner that I use on my hair.
It is easy to make and so far I am very pleased with the results of this, in fact it is working better than I expected. It cleans very well and leaves my hair soft and no itchy scalp which I have had problems with even using "natural" shampoos. It does't lather much. I still condition my hair. My hair is thick, shoulder length and curly/wavy so not easy to manage. The soap nuts has helped a lot. I purchased the soap nuts from Mountain Rose Herbal for only $8.00/lb which is the best price I have found and they are good quality.
You can buy in smaller quantities from Mountain Rose. I have had my one pound for about 2 months and still have about 3/4 of a pound left so I find it economical also.

Thanks for posting this! I've always wondered about soap nuts. I actually never use shampoo though. Any ideas on natural conditioners? Right now I use Burt's Bees but would love to make my own. Most of the recipes though are for one-shot deep conditioning, not daily use.

Natural conditioners

Hi Sparrow,

I haven't made my own conditioner yet.
I like Aubrey Organice and Surya brand. Lately I use Surya most often.

I tried the Wen cleansing cream and it is a nice texture and they all smell wonderful but after a while my hair got that full, puffy kind of damaged look.

Have you tried searching for hair conditioner recipes?
I have seen some that are like body lotion recipes but never made them.

I use the soap nuts as a laundry soap too. I put about 8 of them, peeled into a muslin bag and tie it then put it in with the clothes. This can be re used several times. I let it dry between use.

I've used the nuts before. I didn't notice any difference between them and other soaps (though they cost more).

There is a liquid soap nuts soap out now.

did you use it as shampoo?

Hi Kathryn,

did you use the soap nuts liquid as a shampoo?
I am having good results with it but everybody is different.
It took about 3 weeks for me to notice these results in my hair.

I got my soap nust at Mountain Rose Herbs in Oregon. A pound cost
$8.00, that is the lowest price I have found them at. They sell them in smaller
amounts too. For me they last a long
time I still have about 1/2 lb and this was 3.5 months ago. I use them in the
laundry too. I have seen both liquid and powderd soap nuts out which is good.
I makes it easier to try them out and not have to make the liquid first.

Hi Kathryn,

I make my own liquid by simmering soap nuts in water. Then letting them sit overnight and strain them into bottles the next day. But it is nice to know it is for sale in liquid form too.
