Skin is vey "orangey-yellow" looking-too many veggies?

Hi there. I have received many comments lately about how orange/yellow my skin looks, especially on my palms, the bottoms of my feet and at the joints.

I was told many years ago that it was from eating so many veggies but it seems the older I get the worse it gets. I do eat a lot of veggies. I will eat an entire bag of spinach everyday along with carrots, summer & winter squashes, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, pumpkin and tomatoes. Most of this everyday! I also have berries occasionally. Is it possible to eat too many veggies?

I first noticed 15 years ago when I was breastfeeding my first son and the milk had an orange tint. I freaked out and asked my Dr. if there was something wrong with me. He had me quit breastfeeding before he decided it was the veggies. Has anyone else experienced this? It's becoming quite embarassing!

"Is it possible to eat too many veggies?"

Well..........maybe. Carrots, for instance, have a lot of Vitamin A. Since Vit A is fat-soluble, rather than water soluble, you can end up storing quite a bit of it instead of it flushing out like, say, Vitamin C. It could be you get too much Beta Carotene. Just a guess!
Here, I did a quick search to check my memory; Check this out, then you can search further if you want:

Please go to a doctor and get checked for kidney function. It could also be jaundice or another kidney issue.

I had a coworker that had a similar issue, everyone thought he was hitting the tanning parlor. He was out of work for 8 months by the time he had it checked.

worth ruling out

I'd try dropping the carrots and see if that helps. A couple years ago, my mom got really into fruit juicing and was using alot of carrots in the drinks and started to turn orangey.

If it doesn't fade, I'd see your Dr..just make sure everything's A-OK.

RE: Skin is vey

Get your liver checked!!! Jaundice a yellowing of the skin is caused by liver trouble. Check your eyes. Are the whites of your eyes yellow-if so get to the doctor without delay. Babies will get yellow from beta carotene in their veggies(small body surface area). It takes alot for an adult to do this- although it could be possible. Are you nauseated, having belly pain, unexplained wt loss? Please get checked out.

RE: Skin is vey

I agree. Yellow skin is usually jaundice.
I had a friend who this happened to and hair was breaking off . She had liver cancer. It was too late by the time they found it.
Go: blood work is simple.

RE: Skin is vey

Eating a lot of carrots can make your skin yellowish. It's because the high carotene level (which is converted to vitamin A by your body, but is NOT possible to OD on, like vitamin A -- which is only found in animal sources---is, because your body only converts as much beta-carotene to vitamin A as it needs) helps to detox the liver.

There have been times when I was looking a bit yellow because I was drinking a lot of carrot juice.

I've never heard of any other veggies that cause this.

RE: Skin is vey

I agree with others, I would have that checked out. This is not said to frighten you but just a precaution. My brother-in-law joked with us a few years ago about turning yellow from eating so many baby carrots. The man had colon cancer! He's okay now, but what a scare! Just don't assume it's nothing because he was sure surprised.

RE: Skin is vey

Jaundice or.....hepatitis. Sorry for the bad news. Perhaps get checked out, especially if you have other symptoms.

RE: Skin is vey

Thank you for correcting me about the liver.

I don't know why I thought it was kidney.

But please see a doctor!!!

I agree you need to see a doc.My son when he started baby food loved the orange foods and he had a orange-yellow tint to him so they told me to give him other baby foods that where a different color. He didn't really like the other flavors so it was hard to find ones he liked.

RE: Skin is vey

Thanks everyone. I have had so much blood work done over the last 18 months, surely they would have picked up on any liver disfunction then. I also had a spinal tap which includes 10 vials of blood to be tested. I just had more blood work done last week. I'm getting on the phone right now to find out what they were looking for and what they found. I'll keep you posted.

My eyes are normal and I don't look jaundiced ( I've seen people who are). This has gone on for so many years. I think if it was jaundice I would have become pretty sick by now. I'll look in to the colon connection.

Thanks again!

RE: Skin is vey

WOW, you've been through a lot of tests! I would be curious if I were in your position (as you said) to know what they are looking for. Glad to hear your eyes aren't yellow. Hope everything works out for you.
