skin care

OK ladies. I saw the post about the wrinkle creams. Thanks for the tip on Olay, I'm going to buy that one. My question is about exfoliating your face. We've just moved from Florida to NY and the extreme weather changes are killing my skin. I've tried so many products, but my face is still a mess. It's dry in spots and oily in others. I've read to exfoliate and use microdermabrasion(?). This sounds painful:eek: I'm at the age where I'm finally admitting that I'm getting older and need to really care for my skin and wrinklesx( Any advice on products or past experience is greatly appreciated:) BTW, I'm a drugstore gal, don't like the pushy sales at pricey department stores. Thanks again.

Exfoliating is a MUST! Microdermabrasion is not painful. I use the Neutragena gizmo and it works well.

The best thing I've ever found for my dry skin is Na-PCA spray.

After washing my face, I spray a bit in my hands and apply to my face. While it's still wet, I moisturize. I'm not sure where I buy it, but it's someplace online. I go through maybe 2 bottles a year, so I can never remember where I've bought it. I definitely prefer it with aloe to the "regular" variety. But it's only about $5 a bottle, so defintely NOT pricey.

For moisturizer, I really liked Philosophy Hope In a Jar for Dry skin. It seems pricey, but you get twice as much in a jar than you do Oil of Olay Total Effects, so the price is pretty close. And a gentle cleanser is very important. The Body Shop has some nice ones. I'm currently using Vitamin C Hydrating Facial Cleanser and am very happy with it. That's $14 for 8 oz., but it lasts a long time.

I don't have any oily spots on my face, so I don't know much about combination skin care. But since I've been battling dry skin for oh...22 years...I can definitely speak to that one.

Welcome to NY!

Oil of Olay has a at home microderm abrasion/peel kit .. I LOVE IT ... and it is not harsh on your face .. my face feels as smooth as a baby's bottom after I use it!

Since I am in the South .. not sure about the severe winter affects .. ???

Exfoliation ... think they reccommend at least once a week .. although I am doing good if I do it 2 times a month!

Philosphy is the best!!! Hope in a Jar is fantastic, and it doesn't make your face feel greasy, which is great. You can buy it at the department stores, of course. But if you don't want to deal with the sales people (they normally aren't at the Philosophy counter), you can buy it at drugstore.com or Sephora online as well.

For exfoliation, I like the garden variety drug store bought St. Ive's Apricot Scrub.

I have a recommendation for you. It is a little pricey, but to be honest, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I used to use Oil of Olay, still love it and think it's the best out there as fair as a drugstore goes. I went to a local plastic surgeon that specializes in advanced skin care because I was interested in microdermabrasion, done professionally. I did try to Oil of Olay kit and although I loved how smooth my skin felt after, the effect was not long lasting. The medical esthetician examined my face...crows feet, some fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, oily in some spots, dry in others. And she recommended a line called Obagi Nu-Derm. It is a regimine of different products, meaning a face wash followed by a toner and then depending on whether it's daytime or nighttime, you use a combination the different products. Anyway, to make a long story short, what happens is your skin literally flakes off over a period of about 4 weeks. Sounds dramatic, I know. What made it worse is that I started this a few weeks before Christmas so I was at peak flakage just in time for all of the Christmas parties and festivities!!! The skin doesn't flake off everywhere, mostly where your face moves the most. But once it's done, new, pink skin is underneath and your face has been re-juvenated. My crows feet are much less noticable, fine lines and wrinkles are barely noticable. Skin is much more balanced. I don't even wear foundation anymore. You can check it out at obagi.com.

Just wanted to share my experience. A little more that 2 cents, I know. Sorry about the length!

Take care, Melissa

A litttle granulated sugar in my Cetaphil cleanser. Love it! My skin is soft, smooth and glowing afterwards. Can't beat the price!
