silly appliance question revisited

Some of you may recall from a few weeks ago that I am having a problem with my 3-y.o. top of the line Sears refrigerator-freezer. Well, after a battle that you would not believe, they are going to replace it. The question we now have to consider is whether we want the same type (side by side) or one of the new "trio" types - with the freezer unit on bottom and the "french door" opening refrigerator compartment on top. Does anybody have this kind (trio) of refrigerator and if so - do you like it? Would you recommend it? Why or why not? TIA

Hey, my mom and dad have a less then two yo side by side and it sh*t the bed already. They are getting it replaced too. I suggest getting the trio, since the repair man who tried to fix mom's said that all the side by sides (newer) are all having problems. THey all have compressor problems and stuff. He suggested definately buying the extended warranty.
Good luck. Just wanted to share what he said.

Thanks Meaghan! Do you know if the repairman had any thoughts on the trio? I always buy the extended warranty. Funny thing is in this case they told me I was only entitled to $500 towards the cost of a new fridge - even under my extended warranty. (The fridge cost me $2,000, it was only 3 years old, and it cannot be fixed!!!) Needelss to say they were wrong but I've learned that Sears tends to do a "bait and switch" with these warranty policies. When I suggested that perhaps a class action law suit might be in order if others had experienced such a ridiculous lack of coverage, they quickly acknowledged that my warranty in fact requires full replacement. I do wonder how many other people have been snookered by this. If I could afford to go somewhere else I would, but I'll never buy another Sears product. Thanks for your input!

Lorrie- My DH works at this appliance place (same as the repairman) and I just asked him, and he says you should go with the trio, that from what he has seen, they last longer and are better. Besides, they have so much more fridge room. My SBS seems so cramped.
I hope that helps. Of course, this is just his experience, and he has been doing this for 4 years. Good luck to you!

My bf, an appliance expert, says: As far as the trios go, the trios by Amana & Maytag are usually better built than the LGs made for Kenmore. Their most distinguishing feature is the wire basket in the freezer of the Amana's & Maytags as opposed to the plastic bins in the LGs. Typically, the air flow is better in a bottom mount refrigerator like the trio. Most side by sides have terrible air flow which results in less efficient cooling. If your biggest concern is having the ice & water in the door, side by side is the way to go. Trios just started doing this within the last year, so the technology isn't all there yet.

We had a Trio and really liked...the water thingy was *inside*, which was a little strange to get used to, but it had lots of space (it was HUGE!!) and was very easy to maintain (cleaning, changing water filter, etc.) We had to move, and left the appliances behind, and I think we've said about 100 times how much we miss them...(like good neighbors :) ) We now have a side-by-side and I hate it - it's so cramped and the freezer is a joke - why bother to even have one if it's that awkward? I miss the full size shelves, double door storage, the giant "pizza" drawer (that's what we called the bottom double-wide drawer/tray - we could fit a Costco pizza in there!!) And it was great with summer humidity, too. The only thing we didn't like was occasionally stuff that got pushed to the back of the drawers would freeze, but we never tried to adjust the thermostats - that might have fixed it.

We recently stayed at a vacation rental house, and they had a fridge that looked like the Trio, but had ice/water in the door. I can't comment on how long it lasts, or anything, but considering it was the end of a long, busy season, we were quite impressed with the quality and features. When we replace our current kitchen suite, that's definitely one we'll be trying to track down.

Have you checked consumer reports?

Hi Lorrie,

I have an LG french door fridge with the freezer on the bottom. I've only had it for about a year, but like it a lot so far. It's very roomy, a I love having everything closer to eye level.

Along with Consumer Reports, check out the appliance forum over at GardenWeb. I know there have been many threads about frech door refrigerators. Here's the link: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/appl/
