As a pharmacist I can tell you that it's a good idea to minimize your drug exposure while pregnant. With that said, you also have to weigh the risks and benefits of taking a medication while pregnant. Zofran is normally kept on reserve for the very nauseated patient (one that cannot keep any food down without vomiting). It's considered one of the most effective anti-nausea medications & is a favorite amongst oncologists/chemopatients.

Zofran has a pregnancy risk class rating of "B". This is considered the safest class rating for pregnancy (Tylenol is also "B").

One more thing, it's VERY VERY expensive. $100 or so for a handful of pills. If you decide to fill the prescription, you may want to check your prescription benefits so you know what your copay will be prior to picking it up.

Good luck & congrats on your pregnancy!!

Hello - I am currently 19 wks pregnant and I took Zofran from about week 8 through week 14. It helped some but I still had almost constant nausea. It did help keep me from getting to the point where I couldn't eat anything (which is where I was when I went to get a prescription). 2 weeks ago I had an amnio and hi-res ultrasound (some of it 3-D) and results were excellent for both - dr. said everything is progressing as normal - physical and mental development, weight gain, etc.

Zofran is very expensive - with my prescription copay I paid about $7.00 per pill and I had to take 4 a day. If you have to take them for 6 weeks as I did that works out to over $1100.

My bout with nausea really crippled me - I used to work out about 5x a week, but once I got sick it was all I could do to get to work and come home and do laundry. I hope you will not have that experience, but if you do here's what I tried (please note that this is NOT medical advice, just what helped me get through the misery):

1. Eat whatever you want. The baby will be fine - it will suck all it needs out of you (or so says my mom the OB nurse and my husband the Dr.)
2. If you are on a huge prenatal vitamin that makes you sick, see if your dr. can get you a prescription for a prenatal vitamin that helps with nausea. My OB gave me one and again, it helped a little. But when you are miserable, you'll take everything you can get.
3. Try and keep your stomach from being completely empty. My OB recommended Kool-aid to help keep my tummy going.
4. Eat first thing when you get out of bed, relax a little bit, then hop in the shower.
5. Take a lot of naps. I always felt almost normal in the moments after I woke up from a nap. Plus the more you're asleep, the less you feel yucky!

Also, here's a list of the stuff I tried that didn't help:
1. Peppermints
2. Ginger candy/pills
3. Emetrol
4. Sea Bands
5. Lemon lime sodas

Good luck. It does go away. Mine finally died off about a week ago!

I'm at work & thought I'd do a price check on Zofran. For 30 4-mg tablets it's $757.03!!! Ouch!! The 8-mg's are $1194.95!!!!!
