Shoulder pain

Cathlete
I am experiencing some moderate pain in my -- I guess it is my anterior deltiod. I found an article on the web that calls this injury a deltoid rupture.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing yesterday when I felt the muscle pull. Now I can't even lift my arm all the way up without shooting, awful pain. Even without moving it, it aches.

Anyone else had something like this? What should I be doing to take care of myself, and how long can I expect this to last?

TIA!

A deltoid 'rupture' sounds pretty serious, and not something you can take care of on your own (at least not without possibly have some chronic problems from it). I don't think it will go away on its own.

The guy on dancing with the stars had a biceps tendon rupture, and had to have surgery to correct it). See a doctor about it ASAP just to make sure.

The onset of the shoulder pain I had was slow and fixable with rest, ice, and physical therapy. If I'd gotten what you describe I'd demand to see an orthopedic surgeon immediately. Girl, you can't lift your arm. Go!

HI! Me too, same thing, it could be rotator, bursitis, the rupture is unlikely (see, I've been to the doc!) - but your shoulder sounds frozen....ice, aleve - prolly 500mgs twice a day - watch your stomach - and I had to creatively ace wrap too...but over 2 years, it took less and less to set it off, to the point where it felt on fire....then couldn't sleep on that side...broke down, got a cortisone shot....then the other side went!

Hate to say it, your days of overhead presses and pushups lower than your elbows may be over..lots of exercises you CAN do though, google "codman" shoulder exercises.

There's lots of threads here on the shoulder - and I just blew both out again horseback riding....

Please let us know how you do....I'm pushing to not get more than one shot a year, and if I can function (I"m critical care nurse and fitness teacher), I'll be happy...but may need to break down and get the mri eventually...........sigh.........its why I cancelled STS.......

Ugh, Katie, not good!

Seeing the doc sounds like a good idea.
Just what you wanted to do on your day off, huh?x(

Kate...I agree with others and feel you should get to a Doctor. I had pain like that once, not as severe, but I could not do any shoulder exercises lifting the weight up over my head. It was bicipital tendinitis and I went to Physical Therapy for treatment. It did take quite a long time (about 2-3 months) to heal.

if you rmember the actual point at which you might have done something to it, it could be an acute injury as opposed to something from overtraining, etc. i dropped a very heavily weighted barbell but kind of still had a grip on it with my right arm and it pulled my shoulder. hurt like crap! i went to the orthopedic surgeon (he's a friend) and found out i had an ac joint tear (level 2). you might want to google it and see if that fits (i am NOT recommending using the web to diagnose or treat it, just to see if that's what it might be and/or if you have similar symptoms). i would DEFINITELY see a doctor because if it is something like that and you don't treat it properly it could get MUCH worse. i followed doctor's orders and am finally back to normal after about six weeks or so (can't remember exactly when). my activity was limited but only restricted the first week or so.

just my suggestion.

Katie,

I agree with everyone else. You need to see an orthopedic or sports med doc. This is something you can't diagnose on your own and I speak from experience.

2 years ago I ignored my shoulder tendonitis until I suffered a total rupture of the rotator cuff while sparring at karate. It tore completely off the bone and had to be surgically reattached. The pain was excruciating and I could not raise my arm away from my body at all.

You will probably need an MRI to determine if this is an actual rupture and what degree it is. If it is a partial tear, the DR. will most likely prescribe PT.

Unfortunately, I have found that tears to muscles, tendons and ligaments can take a very long time to heal. However, when done correctly and with paitence, you should be able to return to your re-injury level. I'm back doing push-ups, pull-ups and heavy shoulder work. I just need to listen to my body more.

Good luck!

JJ

Katie,

I agree with everyone and I think you should see a doctor. In the meantime ice and alleve can help. I hope it heals quickly :)

Katie,

I've been suffering from the same injury for about a month now. I'm ashamed to say I didn't go to the doctor. I've modified my UB workouts quite a bit since then, pretty much eliminating chest and shoulder work...just too painful. After reading everyone's advice to you I'm considering going to see a Dr.

Today I'm having a hard time holding up my arm to type this x(
It's time for some ibuprofen.

Hope your feeling better soon :)

just a word of caution on the ibuprofen/alleve/etc. taking it a lot can REALLY compromise your liver!!! also, it really only serves to mask the pain which can cause you to do something that would normally hurt and injure yourself more. it does reduce inflammation, but you don't know what you have really done and if it is inflammatory or something else.

Don't just consider, do it!
From your other post, I see that you find the pain to be 'unbearable' about twice a week. That's definitely not a good thing. Quit being macho ;-) and get yourself to someone who can diagnose and treat what you have, before it turns chronic or gets worse.

Geez, I thought this might just be something I would need to ice for a few days and move on. I will call the doctor tomorrow, promise!!

prolly is probably - I just learned it from my son! Glad to know he's learning something for all the tuition to Christian school! :)
