Short legs and long step

Hi there,

So, I'm quite a petite person at 5'0 and while relatively proportionate, my legs are short-ish. I'm seeing some moves recently using the full-sized step where Cathe "skips" from one side across the top of the step length wise to the other side. After sprained ankle episodes last year, I'm too terrified to do this - I don't think my lateral stride can cut it. So far, I've just tried modifying by going over the step on the not long side, you know, more like up and over. Does that make sense?

Does anybody have any other possible modifcations?

Thanks!
Pam

I have absolutely no advice for you (I'm 5'8")...but when I saw the title of your post I couldn't help but think of the tune "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" by Cake. I love that song!

Hope you get some answers!

Aimee

Sounds like you already have your answer. I'm not quite sure I can visualize what you are talking about but I'm 5' and some moves I've just modified so as to not break my neck. You'll find that the stronger you get the higher you can jump and the more able you are to do moves you never thought you could but I always err on the side of caution. In Body Max 2 during the second step section she does the move where you do side lateral jumps from side to side of the step. At first I just tapped my foot to the back instead of to the edge of the step. The stronger I got the higher I jumped and was able to go to the side. Again as Cathe always says "Listen to your body." Most importantly have fun! Sweat on.

By the way, . . I know having short legs sorta sucks. Esp with ball work.

Thanks very much! I'm just going to keep modifying until my confidence and strength build up. I'm not sure how tall Cathe is, but I'd be curious.

I'm 4'9" and definitely on the short end of the leg stick. For the most part I'm strong enough to do all the moves the way Cathe does, but there are a couple that I modify. My major nemesis is in IMAX 3 when she jumps the length of the step on the floor. Not sure I could ever manage that much of a jump.

Cathe's about 5'2". Several of the others are shorter - I think Lorraine and Cedie.

Hi Peaceful Rainbow (LOVE the name!!),

Thanks for the info. I kind of had a hint that Cathe was a petite beauty like us! You are right, as are other Cathe fans that once my strength gets better (along with my confidence that I won't fall again and re-injure) I will be able to do better and may scale the Step completely.

It's so funny because my son is almost seven and he is 47 inches tall.... holy crap! He's nearly as tall as me!! His father is 6'2. I tell Randy (my son) that no matter how tall he gets, he will still be my son and obey. He concures without question (okay- not always- but we gals have "the stare" on our side!!) There is power in our little bodies, but more importantly in our spirits!! That stands true for all Cathletes, I believe!

So nice to know that petite gals can rock it too!

Pam, my husband is 5'11", but my boys do not appear to have gotten his height genes. My 11 yo is shorter than your 7 yo. ;) I'm hoping they at least make it to average by the time they are grown.

Just keep working at it and you will get stronger. And I know all about the role confidence plays. I'm working back from achilles injury and just know that when it comes time to really start pushing it again I'm going to be very hesitant.

Hi Cathy,

Ouch. I hope your achilles heals quickly and you come back stronger than ever!!

Have a great weekend!
