Shopping for DVD Player: Sony DVP NC-615?

Hi everybody:

I posted under another thread "Recommendations for DVD Player". (Yes, I'm finally going to buy a DVD player -- YIPPEE!! Scared to death of trying to hook it up though). Anyways, after some recommendations from my fellow Cathe-ites (thanks, guys!) and searching a couple of websites, I'm rather interested in the Sony DVP NC-615 5-disc player. Does anyone out there have it? Is it a good one? "Consumer Reports" lists it as excellent but I want to make sure it's good for workout purposes.

Any feedback would be mucho appreciated! If it's a good one I'm gonna buy one this weekend and order The Intensity Series to experiment on it so I can be ready for the Body Blast DVD's when they come!

Thanks!
Patricia

Hi Patricia!

I responded to your other post about the model number. I thought I had another model but I have the Sony 615. I didn't have my reading glasses on when I looked at the model number last time you posted.
Anyway, I'm really pleased with it. I love having the five disc instead of just one. We've gotten some pretty scratched up dvd's that we rented and I haven't seen one glitch yet. HTH!!:7

I have this model also and love it. Got it for Valentines Day. I found it pretty easy to figure out and I tried cross programing with Cathe and Firm DVD's. I wanted to see if it would work with other kinds of DVD's and no problem! Though I honestly don't think I would ever program Cathe and the Firm together it did work. And of course Cathe to Cathe DVD's were no problem. I can't wait to get the new DVD's and try them out, expecially interested in the "Blender" sections, they sound really intriguing.

HTH

I, too, have this model and am quite pleased with it. The best bonus (being electronically challenged) is that since my cable box runs through my VCR, and the DVD player is just connected to the T.V., I can now tape programs and exercise at the same time! This has changed my world! I don't feel rushed to finish in time for my favorite shows anymore! (Sad, but true.) :)

Thanks, you guys!! Guess I'm gettin' a new DVD player this weekend!

Sherry, I am so relieved to get your post today. I tried several local electronics websites (Radio Shack, Future Shop) and couldn't find the "655" model. The 615 costs $279 at Future Shop and $229 (on sale from $249) at Radio Shack -- guess ya know which store I'm buying from, huh? But I was SO worried that I'd be getting the wrong DVD player. The only reason I want a DVD player is for Cathe -- I don't give a darn about watching rental movies with all that extra footage and behind the scenes crap. It's enough I actually sit through the whole movie (since I discovered fitness I find it hard to sit still -- far too much energy!)

Mucho thanks to you too Susan and "Gretzky" for cementing my decision!

Oh good golly, Miss Molly, I am so EXCITED! A new gym and a DVD player all within in a month! My charge card will suffer but oh well!

Oh, now I can get the Body Blast series -- CK Sales, get ready to make some moulah today!

Thanks again, ladies!

Patricia

P.S. Do ya think I put enough exclamation marks in this post? No way, Jose!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, those movies with the extra footage will suck you in, just you wait! :) I said the same thing and am now planning my next movie purchase!

One benefit for the five changer is that you can load up the different DVD's you may want to mix and match a routine from. So you can move smoothly from the warmup of, say, Imax, to the first two sections of Rythmic step, to the Biceps portion of CTX to the cooldown of Body Max... just making these up, but you get the idea. It allows endless possibilities... and you don't have to load and unload the discs. You can either pre-program it or just hit "disk skip" and move manually. Still saves time in the long run. You could easily get away with one, but five is better!

Hi Patricia. You are going to LOVE your DVD player. I just checked www.Crutchfield.com, and they have the NC-655 in stock for $179.99 USD. I'm not sure about the shipping charges to Canada. The NC-615, is the older model, and is not selling anymore at a lot of places in US. The NC-615 was priced as $149.99 USD. The biggest difference I can find between these two is that the 655 has the Progressive Scan feature. IMO, the Progressive Scan is worth the extra few dollars in the long run.

Progressive-scan-capable DVD players deliver sharper, more stable images than standard DVD players. These PS players can output a video signal that will work with all TVs, but the progressive-scan video can be displayed on only digital and HDTV-ready TVs. If you have one of these sets or are considering buying one, progressive-scan is a must.

In other words, you can use this Progressive Scan DVD player on ANY tv, but you see the improved picture only with the HDTV. I think most of the DVD players that are coming out now all have progressive scan.

Just something else to think about. :)

I just want to pipe in here - You are going to love having a dvd player, Patricia! There are so many fun things that you can do - like just all the ab work on several dvds - Ouch! But effective! LOL!
I've had a dvd player for about 9 months and am still thrilled with it! Good luck! I know that a lot of people don't like the tv/dvd/vcr combos, but I didn't want to have to figure out how to hook it up, so that's what I bought and it's been great!
