Shoes certainly are a very personal choice as not all brands fit the same. I happen to really like New Balance because every pair I've had fit my feet like a glove. Nike on the other hand never seem to fit me correctly so I don't even try that brand anymore. My suggestion would be to find a fitness shoe store that has employees who know their products...tell them your needs and then they will bring out several pairs for you to try to get the best fit for you.
And you don't have to spend $100 on a pair of shoes. Tell the shoe salesperson what your spending limit is and they won't push you into their most expensive models...if they have any integrity at all.
Also, for just plain everyday shoes...try Birkenstock. It's all I wear and although they are expensive, I have bought Birkenstock shoes on Ebay and gotten some really great deals on brand new shoes.
