Shelia-? for you

Hi Shelia. Hopefully, you may have some suggestions for me...

Earlier this week, I started experiencing some dull, aching pain in my inner thighs and groin area. I called my dr. immediately, and I am going to see him today. I talked to him on Wed., and he said it could be rounded ligament syndrome and recommended that I get a pelvic cradle. Before I get one, I do want to see the dr. and have him verify that this is what it causing the pain. Anyway, I have not been able to exercise at all this week because I would like more info. on this (hopefully I will get this today at my office visit), and I do not want to make it worse. If you have heard of this condition, do you know of any stretches or exercise that would provide relief? Doctors aren't always up on specific exercises. Thanks!

Shelia- I just got back from the doctor's, and she said it is rounded ligament syndrome-not varicose veins. I asked about exercise, and she said to listen to my body. I am so used to being active (of course, I cut down the frequency and intensity during this pregnancy), and I would still love some ideas from you about any type of exercise or stretching that would be beneficial. Thanks!

Hi Jen,

Unfortunately, round ligament syndrome affects many pregnant women and it does not discriminate with regard to fitness levels. In other words, a highly trained mom could experience the exact same symptoms as a woman who doesn't exercise. You should definitely avoid any twisting movements, quick directional changes, etc. When you have the pain, it may help to sit on a resistaball with your legs wide apart and lean over. You can also lie on your left side in the fetal position when you are experiencing discomfort.

Round ligaments are like "tie downs" for the uterus. During pregnancy, they stretch from two to twelve inches. They are under a lot of stress. Again, symptoms have nothing to do with your fitness level.

Try these modifications and see if it helps.

Take care and keep us informed.

Sheila

Shelia-thank you for your suggestions. Luckily, the pain did subside on Saturday, and I only have mild discomfort in my inner thigh area. I was able to walk on Sunday and do very low impact exercise tonight (a pregnancy DVD). I will follow your advice.
Thanks again!
