Since I don't feel that I am getting enough protein each day, I have decided to try to incorporate a protein shake into my daily menu. I really don't know where to begin. So, I thought I would ask all of you:

What is your favorite type/brand of protein shake?
How much does it cost?
Where do you purchase it?

Or, do you have some great homemade recipe that you'd like to share. I am open to suggestions of any type or flavor, however, being a total chocoholic, I'd love get my fix through a shake!

Thanks for you suggestions!

Here's mine

I love Chocolate silk soy milk (8oz) blended with a frozen banana w/ a little crushed ice. You can use any fruit you want. I rarely use protein powder, but you can throw in whatever you like.

I love MET-RX

total nutrion protein powder!! It's chocolately and thick!! You can get a sample packet at Kroger. I believe they're $2.99. The directions say use the whole packet for 1 shake, but I split it for 2 and add half of a frozen banana. another one I like(though it's not chocolate) is Weider Muscle Builder. It's about $10.00 a can(pretty reasonable). With that I add half of a frozen banana or a half cup of frozen berries or a Tbsp of natural peanut butter, depending on my mood. There's also a fat burner protein shake that Universal Nutrition sells call ProDiet, that is very tasty. I believe it comes in both vanilla or chocolate(not entirely sure). It has 27 grams of protein and cost about $12.99 a can. Well, those are the ones I like. I hope this helps. BTW, I have to get some I'm running low

My favorite Shake......

is Cappuccino Ice from MYOPLEX lite. It is soooo yummy, especially if you love coffee like me

. It is 190cal per serving and 25g of protien. I also have had their chocolate shakes, which are great too, as well as their vanilla's which I add strawberry or banana's to. I have tried so many different brands of protien shakes, and I have found Myoplex lite to be the best. I hope this helps, let us know what you try, and how you liked it.

may not need shakes

Do you know about how many grams of protein you are eating per day, on average? Most people overestimate how much protein they actually need, even with an active lifestyle. Also keep in mind that an increase in protein intake means you need to increase your daily intake of water. Normal recommendations are to drink at least 8, 8 ounce glasses per day (aside from what you drink during and immediately after a workout) so adding more protein, even in a shake form, means adding at least one more glass, possibly more.

Also, do you happen to know what blood type you are? I ask because it is good to know in general, but it's also a great guideling for determining whether it's best for you to get your protein from animal or other sources. You'd be surprised how many other ways you can get protein and even calcium aside from meat and dairy.

Just some thoughts and questions in case you're already at a good level, you know? :)

Shakes

I prefer the Designer Protein brand. They are very low in carbs (2) so I add fruit to get my carbs. I usually use the chocolate with a banana and regular soy milk. I also like the strawberry with frozen strawberries and some kind of juice. They only have 17 grams of protein per scoop so you won't get an overload of protein. I have one for breakfast and it holds me until lunch usually. You might want to try Clif, Luna or Meso-tech bars for more protein as well. The Nancy Clark sports Nutrition book says to multiply your current weight times .7 to get your protein requirement in grams for the day. The .7 is for an adult building muscle. It also says that the maximum amount of protein your body can process is your body weight times .9. Good Luck.

I love Spirutein!

I have been drinking banana Spirutein shakes for years. I have one for breakfast every morning, and I've never tired of it! I mix a scoop of banana Spirutein, plain or vanilla flavored non-fat soy milk, and a half of a banana. Some mornings I add less soy milk but put in plain non-fat yogurt. Oh, and I always add ground flax seeds. I get Spirutein at Whole Foods for about $30 for a large cannister. You can get it at almost any healthfood store, though. If you are going to be making a lot of protein shakes, you may want to invest in hand-held mixer (mine is made by Braun). I just mix my shakes right in the glass I drink it from and there is no messy blender to deal with.

Easy smoothies/shakes

Hi Laura!

Since my mantra is "easy is good"

, I try to keep my fixin's simple when I make protein shakes.

I empty one small container of yogurt (any kind or flavor, usually it's fat-free or at least low fat) into the blender. Then throw in a few partially-defrosted frozen strawberries, maybe a banana and then a scoop of protein powder from GNC (mine is vanilla flavored). Add a few ice cubes, whirl it all together and there it is!

For different flavors sometimes I will use vanilla yogurt and throw in peaches or raspberries or whatever (even peanut butter)! I try to use my imagination. But I especially love the (partially) frozen fruit and ice cubes because then the consistency is almost that of a milkshake instead of a more liquid smoothie.

Have fun experimenting!

No dairy or meat protein

Hi, I just thought I would pick your brain and see what you suggest as good sources of protein aside from animal products. I'm a vegetarian and have been struggling with what to use as extra protein. I do use dairy but would rather use some other things. I know soy is great and tofu (which is soy) and legumes, but I've been wrestling with which is best and in what form. I'm ready to incorporate a protein shake as well just to make things a little easier. Cost of the shakes is a factor as well though, wondering which is less expensive-- the shake or the real food.
Anyway, if you have a chance to answer I'd like to hear your response -- anyone else feel free to respond too! Thanks! Renee'

use soy milk

Renee, use soy milk &/or silken tofu with frozen fruit to make smoothies. If you want to use protein powder, you could get a soy based one.

This is my favorite. I use the strawberry flavor of the Designer Protein and I get that at GNC:

1 cup skim or soy milk
1/2 banana
1 scoop protein powder
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 tbsp flax seeds
1 dash vanilla

Blend in blender and drink. It is important to use frozenberries though because that is what makes the shake cold and thick. It is really yummy!
