Scratched DVDs and CDs

Please forgive my technical ignorance, but is there any hope for scratched DVDs, CDs, video games? Is there any product that can smooth them out?

We have a few things that won't play due to scratches and I'd rather not repurchase everything.

Thanks!

I've used the Scratch Doctor in the past and it worked really well for dvds and cds. We bought ours from Best Buy and have the manual one but now I notice that there is a motorized one.

Hope this helps.

This has worked wonders for me with scratched DVDs. I learned this from Youtube. Trying rubbing a small amount of Canola oil starting from the center and rubbing straight out to the edges (not in a circular motion). Let it stay for a few minutes and then wipe off with a cloth material that does not leave residue (eye glass wiper, etc).

Some have also suggested toothpaste. I tried it once and it worked but I prefer canola oil.

Windex only works for me with smudged DVDs. Also make sure that you clean the lens of your DVD player regularly. Many DVD players with clean lenses can play DVDs that are not severely scratched.

I have also used Skip Doctor that I purchased from Best Buy.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I tried the canola oil and it unfortunately didn't work. Off to BestBuy this afternoon!

Thanks again!

Sorry for this technilogical ignorance:eek:, but how do you clean the lens of a dvd player? This might help me, too! Thanks, Nancy J.~~

I've purchased some sort of motorized scratch dvd cleaner thingy at my office supply store. My Cathe Kick Max CD has a major scratch in it. It didn't work. I think it depends on the scratch but it is well worth a try. It worked for my other DVDs with minor scratches on them. Good luck.

You can buy special DVD/CD with a small brush attached to the underside that will clean the lens (it's called, logically enough, a "CD/DVD lens cleaner"!

For repairing scratched CD's/DVD's, there are several products available. One I've used is called something like CD repair kit (it has a thick liquid that you spread on the CD/DVD then let dry before wiping off).

From what I understand, though, if the CD/DVD isn't playing because of scratches on the top/label side, it can't be repaired.
