scary and horrible experience

Fellow Catheites:

Today I was looking over my credit card bill when I noticed a charge from a company called MWI Connections. I did not recognize the company and know I haven't used my credit card at all this month. So I got online and lo and behold!!! This is a company that has been sued by at least 2 states for fraud! Apparently, when I ordered something from an infomercial, I was inadvertently signed up for something with this other company! ITs called a "negative consent" - they don't ask you if its ok, they just go ahead and bill your credit card and you have to stop it! I'm so naive - when I looked over past credit card bills, I realized I've been paying this for over a year! And I KNOW I never signed up for the service! I called the company and they did every thing they could to get around cancelling my "membership" - you'd have been impressed, I was unmovable and the louder and more demonstrative I got, the more timid he became!!!

So, just to warn you - apparently, sometimes when you order something from TV (most other victims apparently had it happen that way) you will acquire hidden things like this. Look over your statements and be on the lookout for "negative consent" practices!!!

I save all receipts, even for gas, and tick them off my credit card bill each month. With all the fraud these days, I want to make sure we are not paying for something we didnt purchase.

Sounds like you're still out a years worth of "membership" fees? Did you ever get anything from this company? I would contact the Better Business Bureau if they don't refund the entire amount (though after a year, perhaps consent is implied if you don't cancel, so legally you can't get a refund for past payments?)

Yes-I had this happen when I purchased Tae Bo from the tv infomercial! I threw a fit and filed a report with the BBB, but still was not able to get the charges reversed ($200+) because I had a year of membership to some hoakie club -I wasn't even aware and did NOT use any of their services!!!x(

Bummer, futurefitnessdynamo. Do you still have a receipt or packing slip for this purchase? If you've been charged for some "service" that wasn't itemized, maybe you'll have a better chance of getting the charges removed.

Telemarketers also do crap like this. Never say "yes" to anything a telemarketer asks you. I've heard that it can be construed as some kind of consent for billing of a service.
