Running

Okay, so I am going to be joining a gym soon...

One of the things I am going to do there is to try adding running to my cardio routine.

I have never run for exercise in my my life so I don't know how good I'll be or if I'll even like it!

My question is...should I buy running shoes before even attempting this or would it be okay I run (on a treadmill) in my ryka enlights for a couple of weeks until I decide if I want to pursue it further?

I'd hate to spend $ on another pair of sneakers and then decide I don't want to run afterall....

TIA!:)

Oooh, Wendy, that is tough for me to answer. I would never dream of running in anything but my running shoes... But since you are only going to be trying it out, I really don't think that it would hurt any. Just make sure that if you decide to stick with it that you do get a good pair of running shoes. The cost is definitely worth it!

And congrats on the new membership! That is really exciting! It will be fun for Joey to get to make new friends, and for you too! :)

Since you'll be running indoors on a flat surface, I think you'll be okay in your aerobic shoes for a little bit. Just pay very close attention to form and make sure you are completely balanced when you run.

I currently have a pair of cross-trainers that I use for both running and cardio, since I only run once a week, just 4.5 miles. I'm not having any problems and have been doing this most of the winter.

When you increase your mileage, definetely get a separate pair of shoes. Good shoes will literally make or break a runner. I don't want you broken!! ;-)

I use to have 2 pairs of sneakers all the time. One for running and one for cardio, but then again, most of my running was done outside, so you can say I had one pair of indoor shoes and one pair of outdoor shoes:) Now, I just wear the one pair.I buy running shoes and I use them for aerobics as well. And I don't feel/see one bit of difference.
So worse case scenerio, buy a pair of running shoes and if you don't like running, you can use them for step.
I still have a few pairs of shoes kicking around and I will probably wear them outside when the snow is melting and its yucky out.I wouldn't want to wear them in the house after.

Wendy-

Please don't take my advice to be expert here. I only run for the benefit of cross trainning, not to race. I did a little test with my Rykas and my running shoes for a running workout on a treadmill.

The Rykas made me feel as though I had shin splints and I actually could not run in them. When I changed to my running shoes the feeling disappeared. Getting a pair of runing shoes and going to a store where the sales people know about running is your best bet. It may be expensive, but it will be more costly if you get hurt running in Rykas. The worst case scenario would be that you don't run but have great shoes for house cleanning!

PS I tried to run many times before and couldn't without pain; looking back I realize I had always worn a cross trainer.

Just my 2cents :7

LOL Judy...you have a point and Lori DID say she does step, etc in her running shoes and has no problems....Hmmmm...

I would recommend you get an inexpensive pair of running shoes (March is a good time for sales. I think the new models come out at this time and last years' are sold at a discount).

The comfort of your feet/shins may actually make or break your relationship with running.

Don't be fooled by the treadmill. Unless you're running on LifeFitness equipment or one of those very cushy ones, the impact is just as jarring as running on pavement. (In fact, I used one at a hotel we were staying in and I had to get off because I got shin-splints.)

I used to hate, hate running but took it up to get out of the house after my I gave birth to my firstborn. I was as surprised as anybody else when I got bitten by the running bug. Who knows? This may happen to you!

I've been running for 7 years and now and can't imagine my life without it.

Good luck!

Wendy,
I agree, I would get a pair of running shoes, they make all the difference in how my feet/legs feel when running. I think if your regular shoes bother you, you won't ever know if having running shoes would have made all the difference!

I also use my older (not that old) running shoes for step/kickbox etc and have no problems with that, and use my newer running shoes just for running. That's just me though, when I've got the right shoes and clothes on, I enjoy my runs and find I always could have gone longer!

Okay...you convinced me ladies! Once I pick my gym, I will go buy inexpensive running shoes...I mean, it's not like they won't get worn for SOMETHING, right? :+

I am hoping that I enjoy running. So many here enjoy it so much and I know it's the best cardio going!

I'm so excited!:+ :7 :D

In my opinion shin splits come and go no matter what kind of shoes I wore.I have,at times, had shin splits for a couple of runs and then the next run I am o.k..but yet I am in the same shoes.I think some of it has to do with how my foot lands.Another thing, I never use to get shin splits when I took my dog:eek: He use to pull me, so I don't know if my leaning forward a little helped or not:)
But yeah, you could buy a cheap pair soon I would think. There are always deals. And like I said, use them for Aerobics after.
I think I have always used running shoes for running but I have also used them for step to.I didn't see any difference when using a cross trainer v.s a runner for step.Thats why I said you could use your running shoes for step if you don't like running.
