Running in place

Hi Cathe,
I have a quick question about running. I don't have a treadmill and I was wondering if I would get the same benefits of running if I were to run in place for about thirty minutes? Would I burn the same amount of calories? Would it be harder on my joints?
 
I can jump in here--running in place is not as intense as running outside or on a treadmill. Reason is mainly b/c it takes more energy to propel yourself forward than to stay in place. For the same reason, I think running outside/treadmill is tougher on the joints.
