Running first race, need advice

Hi everybody,

I am running my first race this Saturday. It is a 4 mile race on the beach. It is in hard packed sand. I am doing it for personal satisfaction, not to compete. I can run 4 miles, but I am no means a competitor. :) Anyway, I want to know what to eat, and when to feel energetic during the race. Also, for the seasoned racers out there, do you wear sunglasses, hat/visor or both? Thanks for the advice.

Lori

Hey Lori, what time does the race start? What are you used to eating before you run? You never want to do something new on race day and that includes what you eat. My advice to you is to eat what you are used to normally eating before a run. A race that short doesn't require special "fueling." For me, before a 10K race in the morning, I will have a mini bagel and half a banana, about 2 hours before the start. Make sure you are well hydrated in the days leading up to the race. Don't start out fast. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement at the start. Run your own race. Pace yourself and enjoy the experience. This one is for fun:) Hopefully you are running in running shoes on the sand and not bare feet. Good luck!! Also, I live in a tropical climate and ALWAYS wear a hat. I don't do sunglasses because they make my face sweaty when I run.

Thanks runninggal. I wanted to know what to eat for breakfast. The race starts at 12:30. I am in Florida, it was 82 today, so I am thinking it will be warm. I usually have oatmeal and fruit so I will stick with that. Yes, the race is short, so I won't need any calories during the race. I was just afraid of feeling full versus feeling hungry. I like to run 2-3 hours after I eat. So I will do that. :) I do have running shoes, and I agree with you about the sunglasses, they turn into a greasy mess, and slide down my face. I will look for a lightweight hat. Thanks for the tips! :)

Lori :)

Hey Lori...run four miles at the top of the beach...in the loose thick sand...and we will all bow to you!!!:) Now that's a workout!!

Thanks Janice, I am hoping just to survive the whole thing and run the entire race. Last years female winner had a time of 24:01. I am thinking I will double that time. :)
