Running and toe nail loss...

WARNING.....NOT FOR THE SQWEEMISH!!!!!!!!!!!

So I lost a toe nail to running in January, it grew back. I bought new running shoes and no blisters!

Well, the past 2 days, after my morning treck on my "mill", the entire toe area of my sock is full of blood from the toe next to it! I never feel any pain, even when I fiddle with it, so the blood is such a surprise!

I have seen toe caps in "Road Runner Sports" but they are expensive. Does anyone have any other "running supply" websites I could try?

Ima, I hope you get some good answers. I also lost a toenail, and it started with bloody socks and no pain.

The first lost nail hurt like hell!!!! Just to touch, it hurt! You never really comprehend how often your toddlers stand/step on mommy's feet until you have a blister under the toenail that is so big that it pops the nail off! Youch!

I want to know the answer, too. I have a very BLACK toenail that I'm sure is about ready to fall off from running and the answer you get could really help me out. Of course, I doubt I will be able to save this nail, obviously it's dead.

After I lost a toenail while training for a marathon someone recommended that I try a larger size shoe. I wear size 8 or 8 1/2 street shoes but a size 9 running shoe.

That was quite awhile ago and no more toenail problems.

I've never heard of this. Is this common? How much mileage do you have to put on in a week in order for this to be a concern? It sounds really nasty!!!

As a distance runner....it has always been a goal of mine to find a shoe that does not cause black toenails. It is really tough. I usually get them from downhill running. The shoes cannot be to tight or too loose. I ran in Adidas for years without any problems..then they seemed to change their shoes. I found some trail shoes (Montrail Hardrocks) that are the best shoes I have run in, and after a 31 mile run...NO BLACK toenails. I have a wide foot and found some Reeboks that worked well for regular road running. I do run alot of distance though...:)..Carole

I have the same problem right now, I have a race on Saturday May 7th, 10k run and I have been training harder these last two weeks, an hour every other day and guess what? I have sore toes... my sneakers fit perfect but since I added the gel for my heals the sneaker is tighter, so I guess that is the reason, so I took them off and will use them on the race day, after all I can afford the aching toes after the race, hahaha.
The joy of moving, N
