Runners: Recovery HR?

Bunbun

Cathlete
I'm confused about when to measure my recovery heart rate. Is it the first minute after I'm done racewalking? I make sure my HR drops by at least 10 bpm, but I am still moving because I do a cool down in which I gradually walk slower. So if I'm still walking 3 mph in the first minute of my cool down, do I measure it then? Or do I wait until the end of my 3-minute cool down, when I actually stop walking?

Thanks!

Hi BunBun,

As to the recovery heart rate, for us it depends on what type of runner, sprinters we take standing still, while the long distance runner is the one who just slowes down to a fast walk and it is actually taken after 1 minute of fast walking not within the minute they slow down.

If your doing anything under 2 miles then go with the sprinter, if your walkracing for more then two miles go with the long distance runner.

Thanks, Kit. I racewalk 4-5 miles, so long distance I guess. After 1 minute of my walking cooldown, I guess?

Bunbun,

Yes after the first minute of your walking cool down, as your heart rate is still pretty much struggling to come down with the new pace before that, and can spike back up sometimes.
