My son has to run 5 miles for his blackbelt! ( He has never been a runner). Anyway, I told him that I would help. Having never been a runner, I don't know where/how to begin. We have a track nearby so we will train there. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

We have about a year to train.

Hi:

Make sure you buy running shoes just for running. That made a huge difference for me.

Good luck.

Hi,
Just wanted to wish your son good luck. I'm a brown belt in TaeKwonDo and hope to start screening for my black belt next year. Our school doesn't require a 5 mile run but I've been running 5-8 miles 3 times per week for fitness and to build up endurance needed for sparring.

I agree with the other posters. Runnersworld.com is really helpful and good shoes are a must. Start out slow with a walk/run program and gradually increase to all running. Have fun.

I followed Prevention magazines walk to jog program. You can find the program on the prevention site. It is a 12 week program that gradually increases running time. I would of never believed I could run for so long!! The program is created by a runner in Pennsylvania, her name is Jane Serues. If you go to Prevention.com and maybe put her name in the search or search running it will give you the 12 week schedule. Eventually you can run for 45 minutes continuously. I was somebody who could not run for one minute without becoming winded!! This program works!!!
