Good morning runners!

I will be running around this lake today
http://www.nps.gov/applications/parkphotos/whislake2.jpg

It is about 19.6 miles about half trail and half pavement. The weather is going to be nice I think, Never got more than a few sprinkles yesterday.

Mattea...We don't have much for running shoe stores here either, the ones we do have are so high on their prices. Alot of times I just search my shoe online and find the cheapest price and without shipping..Road Runner does have good specials though. I think it might just be you getting used to the tempo type of run with the monitor. Not sure you should run any faster in the warm-up. I know when I first started doing runs by my HR it took awhile...loved your story about Sarah, Elaine and I in 2008...:)

Karin...I liked BBBB alot. Working the whole core like that is quite different. And the legwork was new for me. Good Luck in your 5K today!!! let us know how it goes...:)

What a beautiful picture Carole! It makes me want to jump in there and start running....very inspiring! I have a question for you oh queen guru of trail running. I have been getting into running trails more and more and becoming for disenchanted with roads. Do you recommend getting specialized trail shoes? So far I have just been using my regular running shoes (Asics Kayanos) Is it worth the investment?
Today I'll be doing a hill run of about 7 miles. Wishing everyone
a great running day!
ShellyC

Shelly...yes...definitely invest in some trail shoes! Most of the brand names carry them Adidas, Reebok, Asics etc. As I got into more distance on trails I switched from Adidas trail shoes to Montrail and I now run in one called the Hardrock. If you can try some on, that is best. I am fortunate to live near 2 beautiful lakes...:)...enjoy your hilly run!

Ya know Carole, you can just drive around that lake ;) Thanks for showing us where you go to get the bears all liquored up! Very beautiful!!

Shelly, Have fun on your hilly 7 miles! That sounds wonderful!

I have a lot of work to do if I want to keep up with Elaine and Carole in 2008!!:7 But not today...today is yoga...a nice stretchy yoga! Bryan Kest! Man, he gets in there good!!!!

HI Girls

Carole, have a good run! What about flies? I wouldn't be able to run in a wooded area.I don't like things buzzing at me and I like to watch the traffic and wave to people. It keep me occupied! LOL

I am hoping to go for a run tonight.I don't know how long it will be or if I will even get one in.This is my rest day but I am tempted to run and do abs.
We will see.
Lori:)

Yes Carole, your picture is very beautiful. I just don't think I could run there because I would be so tense looking out for bears and mountain lions!

I'm going to do the floor section of GS Legs with some leg extensions and hamstring curls added on. Then I will attempt to do one of my many yoga DVD's! I just recently started doing yoga because Sarah is such an effective nag and in my obsessive, gotta have 'em all way, I bought several DVDs. I'm a pitiful yogi but I keep trying cause it feels sooooo good.

carole that looks gorgeous!!! How do you have the energy to keep up such high mileage? I only ran 5 miles today and felt crappy. I had that half last weekend and dont know if my body is just tired or what this week. I am suppose to take my mileage up to 14miles ,do you think if I wait and do that 2 weeks before my next half that would be okay? Will it give me enough time to rest? I am still learning on how to juggle this scheduling stuff. I have a 5k next weekend and didnt know if I should attempt 14miles the next day or not so I thought maybe I should wait and do it the following week. please help as I am confused on what to do. I want to feel great come may 20th not fried.

My goodness Carol! What a wonderful place to run! I'm sure the scenery inspires you to no end! I don't have any place that pretty around here!:-(

Hmmm...I haven't run since the beginning of the week. I was at the gym on Friday but that was for spin. I can get another run in on either Tuesday and/or Friday according to my rotation.

Today is a rest day and tomorrow is u/b and ab work. CTX U/B split is on the rotation but I'm considering going to the gym instead to give the weight machines a try instead (finally)...we'll see.

Hello ladies. Carole that lake looks beautiful. I hope that you had a great run today.

Just got back from my 5K race and my goal was to go at a pace of 5.6 to 5.8 mph. Well, I did it. I finished the race in 32 min 58 sec, which is about 5.6 mph. I must say that from the run yesterday and the run today I am pooped. I think tomorrow will be a complete rest or a GS upper body workout with no legs or cardio.

I hope everybody enjoys their Sunday. Happy running :) .

Karin

Good job Karin! YEAY! If you don't mind my asking a dumb question...how do you know your pace when you are running outside? Is there an hrm that can give you that info or something??

Hey Tigger! Not a dumb question at all. I actually have a little GPS system. Here's the link.

http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner301/

My DH got it for me for Christmas and I must say that I was not excited about spending $200 on this thing and thought that I didn't really need it, but now that I have it I love it!! So, using this you can know how far you ran (don't have to drive your car around town to do that anymore), how long it took, pace, rest time, etc... Then there are some features that I haven't used yet like the virtual running partner option where you set your pace and it keeps you on pace. You can imagine that the runs never get boring with this thing. Also, I am a tech-geek so I love that you can download all of your mileage onto your computer to keep track of your progress.

Sorry for the long answer, but I really do love this thing!!!

Karin

Karin-Congratulations! That is awesome, and I am completely jealous of your gadget! I have a pedometer that you don't have to wear, but can just drop into a pocket or pouch and I sometimes use that to determine the run mileage, but then I actually have to do math and lord only knows if I'm ever right, lol!

Carole-That is one incredible run! I would never make it around that lake, I'd be too busy standing there, staring, with my jaws open--letting the flies in no doubt Lori;-) Actually, if you are running in a wooded area the flies aren't bad at all, I find that it's when I hit open field trails that the bugs are the worst.
I'll keep trying with the HRM and try to get used to keeping my HR where it should be w/o having to keep my eyes on the display.
This morning I did Bootcamp and then a 24:02 min. run outside, in the, sigh...rain. But on the bright side I felt great and made it 2.5 miles in that time-hills and all!

Shelly-Good luck on those hills, they can make 7 feel more like 14
Or if you're Carole, Sarah, or Elaine 24 feel more like 48:p

Elaine-I'll join Sarah in the nagging-Bryan Kest especially, as she says "gets in there good"!

Good luck the rest of the runners!
Mattea

Hi,

Just wanted to jump in and say that that lake looks gorgeous! I wish we had something like that. I started running outside last week and just can't believe how much fun it is compared to being stuck on a TM.Or how much harder! I'm back to doing run:walks and am only doing 3:1s. The other day I thought I'd die with just that but by yesterday I lasted over an hour in total. Yesterday was my first run in the rain. Light drizzle but enough to be soaked by an hour. I loved it! Puddles and all!!! I hate running in hot weather.
I have a Forerunner 101. I didn't think I needed one either but it's awesome knowing how far you've run without having to map it out. I'm glad I got it v. the MP3 player.

Congratulations Karin on your 5K..way to go!! Dont you just love races? I also use a Garmin forerunner in my training but I never carry it when I race. I don't like to be preoccupied and worried about what pace I'm running. I go strictly by perceived exertion and relax and have fun. The adrenalin rush from the event always gives me a boost. The strategy works for me anyway.
Today I ran my 7 mile hilly loop around my neighborhood, paced at
9:15, a tad over an hour.
Carole-thank you thank you for your advise on the trail shoes. I was leaning in that direction and on your advise I've decided to go for it. I'm sure my feet will thank me for it.
Happy trails to you!
ShellyC

Sarah...actually it is the other lake where I saw the bear!!! And what you said about driving around the lake...well one of my DH's friends said the same thing when DH told him a few years ago I was running aroung the lake...:)..I agree Kest works you....and not at all bad to look at...:)

Lori..not flies but the damn gnats come out in the hotter weather!! I forgot my spray...

Elaine...we sometimes see mountain lion tracks but so far so good. It helps to run in numbers!! The attacks that I have read about are about 3 hours south of us. GS floor is a great workout. I like to do my own curls and leg exts too.

Laura...I have done this distance for almost 10 years, aside from injuries my body is used to it..:)..I would put off the 14 and not do it the day after a 5K race. Let your body recover a bit.

Wendy...it really is beautiful and I feel so blessed to live here. I bet you will find some weight machines you like at the gym.

Karin...WAY TO GO!!! You did great. You deserve to be pooped...:)..I also use a GPS system when I do long trail runs as they are usually not marked. Mine is also a Heart Rate Monitor by Timex.

Mattea...you did a great workout. BC always humbles me and also a run!!...It is easy to take things for granted where I live.

Welcome R A C H...running outside is probably tougher. I have had enough of running in the rain though...I am liking the sun now...:)

Shelly...good job, what trail shoes did you get?

The run went well. The last few miles uphill were torture...but my sister and I made it along with our friend that met us about 9.5 miles into the run. Came home, showered and layed in the nice sun....what a beautiful day...:)

Hi, sounds like great workouts, everyone.

Well, today I actually warmed up with two rounds of the warmup of CardioKicks, then did CTX chest/back/shoulders, Leslie's WAP 2 mile walk, and segment one of Total Body Stretching. I'm so glad I hung onto a few Leslie's, they're great for active rest days.

I feel like I'm stuck in whimpy workout land right now, waiting on the marathon. It's like pregnancy, lol....you prepare and prepare and then WAIT! I'm scared of doing anything overly strenuous after yesterday's mishap (minor glute pull) during the 5k, and I know I'll be better rested next Sunday but it's still torture for me. :7 My mind wants to do something challenging. ;(

Carol, what a beautiful lake! And I'm extra impressed that you're a vegan, too. ;-)

Karin, congrats on your race! I have a Forerunner 201 that I really need to usemore often.

Kathy G

carole do you think running the 14 miles two weeks before my half is okay? I didnt know if that would be too close or not .But two weeks should give me enough time to recover shouldnt it? thanks
