Runners Check-In April 14th

Am I the 1st to start a thread?? I know you all ran already but are busy preparing for the Holiday...my favorite Holiday! Happy Good Friday, everyone!

GOOD LUCK Laura, on your 1/2 tomorrow! I cannot wait to hear how it goes! Have fun, have fun! I am excited to hear how your "pacing" experiment goes. I have never done that either, looking forward to feedback.

No run, elliptical and some weights...probably HSC. The idea is to rest up in preparation for my 20 mile run tomorrow morning. Last L-O-N-G run before my 3 week taper. Funny...then I go to 13 miles :7 , doesn't seem or feel so long when you're doing 19-20 on the Saturday mornings! I referred to Tuesdays 9.5 as a "quick run" to DH last week :7 ...that is long, too! Comparatively...

Wendy, I hope you are feeling better and that cough is going away!

Hi Sarah...I figured if I tried to start the thread we would have double posted...:)

Good luck on your 20 tomorrow...the taper is so good for your body but tough for most runners as they think they need to run more miles! But your muscles need to recover and prepare for the marathon.

I can't wait to hear how Laura does either...

I'll be doing Core Synergistics and a 3 or 4 mile run.

Beautiful weather yesterday so I did a hard interval run....felt great!!!

Hey you two!

Sarah, you know your in good shape when a 9 mile run is a short run:eek: Its funny, I consider a 6 mile run short now, and that use to be my daily run.
Carole, have fun on your run.Are you doing it outside?

I had alot to do yesterday so I only went for a walk with my friend and the dogs.I got up early today and did 1/2 of BC and a 20 min run.Tonight when I get off of work, I plan on going for a run outside.
Lori:)

I run outside most of the time Lori. I don't have and don't really want a treadmill. I ran on one once and broke it...x( :+ :7

Good luck to everyone on their long runs this weekend. I know we're supposed to have beautiful weather here in Wisconsin; I don't know how it is everywhere else. And good luck to Laura on her half!

I will not have time to work out today. I'm hoping to do 10 or 11 tomorrow, although some effects of my cold are still lingering. I did a rough three yesterday, so I may have to walk more than I'd like tomorrow. We'll see.

How does everyone motivate themselves to keep the mileage up when you're not training for a specific event? My half-marathon is the first weekend of May, and I haven't signed up for any other events for later in the summer. It seems like having a schedule that I have to follow has made a huge difference for me, but I wonder if once the race is over, if my motivation will be gone too.

Take care,

Ellen

You gals are amazing! I ran 5 miles yesterday, cross trained today. I am doing a 11 mile run tomorrow, which seems like nothing compared to you all! :)

I hope someday to think of a 7 mile run as easy! I don't think I've quite gotten to the running is easy and fun phase quite yet. Some days I think it's not so bad, almost fun, and other days I'm thinking WTH am I doing. I feel great afterwards, so I keep doing it! :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter!

Marsha

Carole-

How did you break the treadmill? Overuse, or could it not handle the mileage? LOL! I sometimes use the ones at the gym, but I haven't figured out how to overrride the 30 min. maximum time limit. I don't mind getting off if people are waiting to use it, but usually no one ever is. It's annoying to have to stop it, turn it off, then turn it back on. It really breaks up my workout. Running outside is much more fun. (But the gym provides childcare, so I have to take what I can get-LOL!) ;-)

Hey Runners!!

Excellent runs everyone...

This morning I ran 4.5 miles. I'd like to do 10-miles this weekend, but I have a lot going on. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck Laura on your half...let us know how it goes.

Hope all the long-runners are able to go the distance you desire.

Ellen - I used to wonder how I would stay motivated after an event I was training for was over. I will admit, it's slightly harder, but for me, I knew that I wanted to keep myself in good enough running shape that I could run 10-miles at any given time. I still try to get in my speedwork and long runs no matter what and that keeps me about where I want to be. It all just depends on WHY you are running. Are you running to run race events (which is fine), or do you run because you love to run and the events are just a bonus? Know what I mean? Where you fall in that scenario will play very much into how you adjust after the event is over.

Have a great day everyone!!

Good morning ladies!

I is a rest day for me. I decided not to do the 5k tomorrow, instead I will be pushing my 16 month grandson on a 5 mile run on Venice beach. On Sunday I will be running a 10 mile hilly course.

Laura good luck on your half marathon!

Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Easter!

Josie

Ellen, I hear what you are saying! I am already dreading the day after my marathon because it will all be over! My plan of action...a Fall marathon. I have it narrowed down to 2. I will probably to the 1/2 of one and the full for the other. The only way I can keep post race depression away is to have one waiting in the wings, and there is nothing more motivating than an actual concrete goal!

Search for another race and keep it on the back burner...pick one you can get excited about!

thanks everyone for the good wishes. For some reason I am a little nervous. I always get like that before a race but this is suppose to be just part of the training for the cleveland half. I hope I dont mess myself up. Yeah sarah, I am curious to see how pacing myself will be. I usually just run them and dont pay attention to the time until I am finished. But kevin is a natural . He does triathalons. He is like the energizer bunny, just keeps going and going and going. Wish I had his energy. I havent felt real energetic this past week and a half that is why I thought I should take yesterday and today as rest days. Hope I made the right choice. Good luck on your long run tomorrow, I cant imagine running 20miles,wow!!! you go girl!!!!It is nice to come here and have all your good wishes and support, thanks everyone,it makes a person feel alot better!!!!you guys are great!! After the half we are going to cast away bay in sandusky! I am excited about that!!! I have never been to any of the indoor waterparks. My kids are excited also, it will be fun!!!!! Have a nice easter everyone!!!!!:) :)

Hello Ladies!

It sounds like everyone is doing well on their run today. About 1/2 hour ago I finised my long run, 5 mi, and I'm so excited to tell someone about it. In the past I have ran the 5 mi in about 66 minutes so I figured today it would take me longer since I took my run outside around my hilly neighborhood. It is very beautiful today, near 80, but very windy. I figured that it would take me probably 75 minutes because the wind was pushing against me particulary going up the hills. Well, I am very happy to report that I ran the 5 miles in 58 minutes! I can't believe it! I hope to one day be able to cover the mileage that you all run and to make 7 miles feel like a walk in the park.

Laura, good luck on your 1/2!

Well, I'm off to shower and to run a few errands before I take DD to the doctor again for her ear infection. I'll see you all on Monday when I check in again.

Have a wonderful Easter weekend!!

Hi everyone,
Do you mind if I join your check in? :)

A little background on myself: I'm currently training for the New Jersey Marathon on 4/30 and just finished my last long run on Sunday of 24 miles. I did the Philadelphia marathon in November and decided to follow a different training plan this time that went beyond 20 miles. I'm supposed to be tapering for the next 2 1/2 weeks, but I'm still working out doing weight training and some other crosstraining like step.

My plan for the rest of the year is to do a 50k in August, the Philadelphia Distance Run (1/2 marathon) in Sept., and the Philadelphia Marathon again in November. My "ultimate" goal is to run the Boston Marathon so I'm trying to cut my time down each marathon. Hopefully by the time I'm 45 (I'm 43 now), I'll have either finally run a qualifying time of 3:50 (for the 40-44 age group) or I'll "grandfather" myself in with a 4:00 (45-49 age group)...lol! :)

Good luck to Laura on her half tomorrow! :)

Hi fellow runners!
I'm out of town at my parents house this weekend and have had NO time to post anything, let alone read these threads until today, whew!
First, I had a great tempo run, no treadmill or HRM, so I just kept pushing the intensity, but some hills threw it off a little. 10 min. w/u, 3 min., 4 min., 5 min., (steadily increasing intensity, by my own, fast as I want to run right now gauge ;-) ) 2 min. "blast" up a couple of hills, 5 min., 4 min., 3 min.-jogged the rest of the way home, cool down stretch, it was about 5 miles (don't know exactly), just felt great and wasn't too worried about the mileage. Yesterday, was MM with a long walk w/ DH, and tennis w/ my mom. Then today I felt really "steppy" and needed to do Step Blast, I was flying the whole time, sigh, why can't I feel this good every time?

Laura-best of luck on the 1/2, let know all the details, as a 1/2 is the next biggest race I'll be training for after these 5K's in the spring.

Carole-I'm so happy that you're finally getting some decent weather, for running or otherwise! It's finally in my neck of the woods as it is cold and rainy today.

Sarah-Beginning to taper...I am so excited and impressed by this experience for you that you have me thinking marathony thoughts for next year:+

I don't have a lot of time, but I just wanted to say how awesome everyone single person on this thread makes me feel. I am impressed, inspired, and in awe of how much we accomplish on a daily basis, but then to look back and see it add up into something like a race or "the next race", well, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, especially on this chilly, wet, good for cuddling on the couch day.
Okay, I'll stop with the mushiness now:p

Kathy what plan are you following? I am over distancing myself also this time around to see if it helps prepare me better. Wow your marathon is right around the corner too. goodluck!

Laura,
I'm following the 4:00 finish schedule in the book "4 Months to a 4 Hour Marathon" written by Dave Kuehls. It had me running a 21, 23, and 24 mile long run the last 5 weeks which was tough but I feel better prepared this time around.

I followed Jeff Galloway's "To Finish" schedule in his book "Marathon" last year in preparation for the Philly marathon. I ran the Philly 1/2 Marathon in Sept. with a 2:05 finish and thought I could finish the November full marathon in 4:15. So I joined up with a pace team and kept up with them (we were actually AHEAD of schedule) until mile 17 then I fell back a little. I could still see them at mile 20 but totally lost steam after that and drug butt to the end and finished in 4:35.

This really showed me that "I" needed to go beyond the 20 miles to have a strong finish (not trying to scare anyone that's only going to 20 miles....it's just MY experience and body). :-( So I'm shooting for a 4:15 or under finish again in the NJ Marathon in a couple of weeks. If I still fall short, lol.....my next training phase will include a 26 mile long run. ;-)

If you'd like me to type out the 17 week schedule I'm following now for you, let me know. It's pretty easy to follow, the two main runs are on Wed. & Sat with a couple of short easy "jogs" during the week. Here's an overview:

Weeks 1-8: Speed Drills (400 meter repeats) + a long run ranging from 7 to 17 miles + 2 easy runs

Weeks 9-14: Tempo Runs ranging from 4 to 8 miles + a long run ranging from 19 to 24 miles + 2 easy runs

Weeks 15-17: Taper Phase with marathon pace runs ranging from 4 to 8 miles + a ten mile run + easy runs

Is there one for a half marathon? I dont think a full marathon is in my near future just yet. Maybe one day but probably not this year. I will be doing another half in may and maybe one in october. I cant even begin to imagine doubling my mileage of the half. It seems like eternity 26.2miles Yikes!!! I bow down to you people who go for the full marathon,it takes real commitment to complete 26.2miles. I am following a mixture of hal higdons and jeff galloways schedules this time around. I have never heard of that dave kuehls. I am overdistancing this time up to 14-15miles is what it calls for. The other schedules I followed before only had me going up to 11miles and like you at the end I felt like I had no energy, I felt wore out afterwards and I dont want that this time around. I finished my last half at 2hrs 11min. I am shooting closer towards 2hrs this time around. I dont think I will finish right at 2hrs, it will probably still be over that but I would be happy even if I cut a few minutes off my last one. well gotta get my stuff ready for the big day. goodnight and hope everyone has a nice easter!!!!

Laura,
No, sorry....the book is written for marathons. The key runs for me were the speed drills (ran a quarter mile at an 8:20 or 7.3 treadmill speed for 2 minutes - slowed down to 10:00 or 6.0 treadmill for 2 minutes) alternating between the two - up to 16 times. It helped me with leg turnover and building a little endurance/speed. The other thing was running longer "long runs." Hopefully all this will payoff in a couple of weeks, lol....otherwise I'm back to square one! :7

I think it's great that you've found a distance that you enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that! :) I know a guy that's done 4 marathons and many, many more half marathons because he enjoys the 13.1 miles a lot more. He says he doesn't like all the prep work of a full marathon and the recovery period after (he's fast, BTW...lol!) So it's all about what works for YOU! ;)

I'm looking forward to you race report when you finish. Good luck, Laura! :)
