Runners Check-In 4-3-06

O.k. ladies, I didn't see a check-in for this yet. I know the discussion from the "Long run hydration" post was brief but I loved the idea.

Did any of you have an awesome run today that you want to brag about?? No better way to start the week!

Since I did 16.5 miles on Saturday, I left today to 60 minutes on the elliptical followed by Muscle Max. If I am going to get to the "Start Line" of this marathon, I must utilize that elliptical a few times a week!

Brings up another question...are you training for a Spring race?? Details please!

Hi Sarah!...I did 4 miles in the rain today....I hate this rain!!!! My legs were a bit tired after the 16 miles yesterday.

My sister and I are pacing a runner in the Western States 100 Mile Endurance run in June. I will meet Pat at mile 58 and pace her for 20 miles and my sister will pace her after that until mile 98. I am a little nervous as I have not done this before. But excited at the prospect!

I am also planning on a 50K trail run in July in Ashland Oregon.

When is your marathon??

Hi Girls,

Im not training for anything b/c there isn't much around here to train for! I only did 4 miles today.I am hoping that tomorrow will be my long run.Uh..16.5 miles..may I ask how long that took you gals to run? The furthest I have ran is 12 miles and that took me two hours.

Lori:)

Hi Lori...I did my 16 miles on a tough trail course and it is always slower than pavement for me. Took about 3 hours 20 mins as we walked some of the steep uphill...:)

LOL you guys are putting me to SHAME with your long runs!!! I'm signed up for a 10k on Saturday so I'm taking it easy this week. Did Imax 2 yesterday, then yoga today.

It's been raining almost every day, and will continue through the run on Saturday. x( :-( It's a trail run, with a lot of hills, so I'm expecting the mud will make it take about 80 minutes, if I'm lucky!!! x( I generally run about a 10 minute mile.

Hi Everyone -

I hope y'all don't mind if I join in. I just started running and would love any insight I can gain from this group. I am just a beginning runner doing a run/walk program to build up endurance, but planning on running the Houston 1/2 half marathon in Jan 07, with some 5Ks and a 10K in between. I have never done a race before so I am excited. I am following a 10 week run/walk program from the book Complete Book of Running for Women. I run/walk 4 days a week for 30 mins. This week I am running for 8 minutes, then walking for 2. I can't wait to some day build up to doing as many miles as you all do. This morning I had stomach cramps during my run for the first time, so trying to figure out what would have caused it.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and say hi.

Sounds like a tough trail run Amy!! I bet you will do well...:)

Diane...nice to meet you. Doing some 5 and 10K's will be great training for a half marathon. Starting off slow is such a good idea for beginners. You will build up endurance in time...:)...

Did you eat something right before you ran? Or sometimes just not getting in enough air when you first start running can cause pain in your stomach, what we runners refer to as a "stitch in the side"...

Hey, I would like to join this checkin as well!
I am a slow runner, not a fast runner by any means. I run a 10min mile...I hope it's ok that I chime in here w/ you all!

I ran the Freescale Marathon/Half Marathon in Austin on February of this year. It was a blast to say the least! My time for the 13.1miles was 2hours and 19mins! I thought that was pretty good considering I just started seriously running about a year ago!

I lost almost 70lbs about 3years ago and have maintained since then. I wouls LOVE to lose another 5-8lbs to reach my goal weight of 123lbs.

Right now, I am following a SS/running rotation where I am doing SS everyday (half the tape) and running every other day.
This is my rotation for this week:
Monday: ran 3miles and half of TONE IT UP
Tuesday: CTX cardio and finish TIU
Wednesday: run 3miles and do FIRM IT UP
Thursday: CTX cardio and finish FIU
Friday: do all of SHAPE IT UP
Saturday: LONg run, maybe 8 or 9miles
Sunday: rest/yoga

What do ya think?

Also, I would VERY much appreciate some insight of your eating while you are doing this running. I eat pretty clean, I think. But, would love some idea of what your meal plans are like.

THANKS very much:)
take care:)
Gloria

I think I ate too soon before I ran. I am still trying to figure out something quick to eat before a short run in the morning. How soon can you run after having a small breakfast? I usually have the rest of my breakfast after the run.

I have a question for y'all. I am running 4 days a week, but I am wondering how often I should be doing crosstraining in between. I am thinking of adding the elliptical or a spinning class on the days I am not running. Right now I am just weight lifting on the days I am not running.

Hey, Gloria! Congrats on your weight loss!! I'm about where you are, those dreaded last 5-10 pounds have been hanging out with me since, well, for a Long Time. ;-)

I run a 10 min mile, too. I don't really consider that "slow"... but it's way slower than a lot of these ladies!! I just think, I'm running while carrying a 10lb dumbbell around my hips! No wonder I'm slower than I want to be!! LOL

Carole, I keep looking for a trail run that's north of me and south of you. It would be fun to go to one and KNOW someone there!!!

The run this weekend is rain or shine... I last did this one in 2004.

Diane...before my daily runs (not my long runs) I have a half a protein bar about 30-60 min before my run. I then after have a smoothie with fresh fruit and other stuff...:)..crosstraining can benefit your running. You might want to add one of those options once a week to see how you feel with adding it to the running.

Gloria...that is awesome you lost that weight and have kept it off...way to go! Your time for the half was a good one...:)..I think your rotation looks good. I follow a Vegan way of eating and have for about 2 years. I do cheat and have chips...(my weakness)x( :)

Amy...that would be so fun to do a trail run with you...:)

Hi there! I very rarely post as I am afflicted with extreme cybershyness but I couldn't resist this one. I have been a Cathe addict for a good 10 years but have only fallen in love with running
for the last year or so. I have run in 3 10ks and 2 half marathons so far. My last half marathon was in Phoenix and I managed a 1:49 time..not too shabby for a 49 yr old. I still have so much to learn
and I am in awe of some of the runners on this forum. I am hoping to run my first full marathon next Jan. (PF Chang's Rock n Roll) in the meantime I have another half coming up in May, the Whisky row event in Prescott, Az (where I live). Its an extremely challenging hilly course. I'm going to do a 12 mile trail run tomorrow...lots of great trails around here. I eagerly look forward to catching any pearls of wisdom from other runners!
happy running

ShellyC, So glad we were able to draw you out of lurking! Nothing to be shy about, we are all great friends looking for more tough women like you to add to our group! Our goal is to take over the world!!:p

Carole, the Flying Pig is May 7th! I cannot wait! It is all I think about! I am going to miss the training and I will be sad when the actual race is over but I am planning a Fall marathon...assuming the Pig goes well!

Lori ann, my 16.5 mile run Saturday took 2:31:08...according to my HRM.

To all you runners...it doesn't matter how fast you are, it doesnn't matter how slow you are. Your fellow runners do not care! All we want is for you to have an awesome run! Somedays that may be an 8 minute mile, other days it may mean a 12 minute mile. Either way, it is faster than if you never left your couch at all! Don't worry about speed, just get out there and have a BLAST!!

Oh, and Carole...try to avoid the bears! They are not all preoccupied, already full, drunk or stupid!

I ran six miles on sunday and also jiggle free arms.Today I did 45minutes in spin class. love it, I want to get a spin bike for at home. Sarah, does the eliptical help with your running alot? I currently cross train 2x week, one day of bootcamp class at our ymca and spin class, with 3-4days of running. I have a half marathon in two weeks and another in may. I am with the other girls, needing to lose another4pds but all the training is helping with my mind set as far as eating goes. since training for the half marathons, I am already eating better without much effort, thank goodness, its finally happening. see ya!!!

Sorry, I have nothing to add because today I have done a big fat NOTHING! I am tired after a weekend of Disneyland.

HOWEVER, at 12:30 last night, after I got home, I put my name in the lottery for the St. George marathon once again.

If that doesn't pan out then perhaps it will be Chicago that I run this fall.

In any case, no more winters off for me. I can't stand it!!! I'll be running spring and fall marathons from here on out.

sarah are you still doing 3 total body workouts even though you are training for a marathon? some days my legs feel so tired,do you ever get like that?I usually take 2 rest days a week also. I am tweeking my schedule around to see if I just need to adjust what I do on what days(with crosstraining and the running). anyways I am trying to organize my days to get the most out of my workouts,Ireally want to have a better time this year. thanks

Laura, Yes, the elliptical has helped my running so much! I am recovering from a stress fracture and the elliptical has helped me bounce back almost seamlessly! I had to take 6 weeks off of impact activity (I was lucky it was only 6 weeks). It took me absolutely no time to return to my usual distances. Right now I am doing 3 days a week running and may stick to that for the rest of my marathon training. The other 3 days are elliptical. Because I am running fewer days a week, my weekly mileage is lower but my runs are so much better, they feel amazing, I am lowering my chance of a relapse or even a new injury.

I have changed up a few things since the new year, including how many days I run. With the changes, I am absolutely amazed at how quick my body is recovering from the weekly Saturday long runs! I did 16.5 miles Saturday yet felt strong enough to increase the weights (squats included) today during Muscle Max! And this was AFTER 60 minutes on the elliptical!

Finally, yes...I am still doing 3 days a week of total body circuit/endurance workouts. I want to keep every muscle conditioned so that I am not aching head to toe after my long runs or getting injured...like so many in my running group are!

Sarah, thanks so much for writing that. I wasn't going to post anything because I am a REALLY slow runner (5-5.5 mph). However, I am training for a 10K over Memorial Day weekend this year and ran for 1 hour on Saturday. This is the longest I have ever run in my life and I was so excited. Thanks again for all of the inspiration that you have given.

Karin

Karin, One hour running is so AWESOME!!! I remember the first time I did that. Even after years of Cathe, I had a heck of a time going up and down the stairs after that run! I am pretty sure it was at 5.0 mph, too! All I could think of was how proud I was that I ran further and longer than I ever have in my life! That was only 15 months ago. You should be very proud, too! Not too many people can run 30 minutes, let along SIXTY!!!!!!!!!!!

AWESOME WORK, Karin!!

Can I join you? I am about 5 weeks away from a 10K. My running partner and I ran 6 miles on Saturday and I did 4.41 miles this morning. The time change really messed with me. I am a slow runner about a 10 minute mile. We are thinking about speed training to build up our speed.
