Runners - a delicate question

I know there are lots of you who run fair distance, and I'm wondering if any of you have the same problem I do. My legs are good, my lungs are good, but my, erm, let's just call it my "intestinal region" starts to give out on me if I run longer than 10 km. I imagine it's from the pounding. I'd like to be able to run longer distances (half marathons, maybe even a full marathon) but I can't imagine being able to without serious stomach pain and possible embarassment. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this problem or at the very least lessen it?

Thanks.:)

Can you take care of that before you run?...or does that matter? I rarely have that problem although depending on what my sister eats she has made a mad dash to the bushes on occasion...:)...Carole

I try to, Carole, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Some days are worse than others. Hmmmmmmmm... a mad dash for the bushes is difficult on my route. Perhaps I could just ring someone's doorbell - "hi there, just wondering if I could use your bathroom?":p

I once "tried" to be a runner. I had this embarassing problem just a few minutes into each run. I would try to take care of it beforehand, but my body wants to go when it's good and ready. And running REALLY got it good and ready. LOL! It was easy to deal with when running on a treadmill at the gym - just pause the treadmill and run to the bathroom. But running outside posed a whole new challenge. I couldn't run very far from home for fear of being stuck without "proper facilities". So that's one reason I don't run anymore....

"Runner's trots" are a fairly common occurence - you can do a google search for it and find tons of tips for coping.

...Hope everything comes out alright for ya... ;)

Yes Emily...nice pun! I have not run with many that have had this problem. Except for once in awhile. Hope you you find a way to cope Shelley...:)...Carole

Well, I Googled it, as Emily suggested, and the advice on all websites seems to be the same, so I guess I'll try their suggestions.

Thanks Emily!

Are you drinking a sports drink or using an energy gel?

There are certain sports drinks and gels that mess me up pretty bad.

I ABSOLUTELY can't drink Energy Water and cannot use the energy gel made by Clif Bar.

It's been trial and error for me...

Shelley,

I have the same problem. It's unpredictable when it's going to happen except for the fact that it's usually longer distances for me, too. I can NOT drink or eat anything with sugar in it or it will severly upset my stomach! Sometimes I just get a stomachache and it goes away on it's own and other times I'm making a MAD DASH for the bathroom! One time, when I was training for a half marathon last January, I was SOOOO sick from both ends - if you know what I mean. (sorry if TMI)

Anyway, that is part of the reason I wonder if I will ever be able to run a marathon. I mean, I would NEED some kind of energy before or during I think but if I do that, I'd be DYING!x(

No, I don't use either of those things. I guess I'll just have to keep experimenting until I hopefully find something that works.

This just dashes my dreams of the 2006 Games though!;)

Happens to me occasionally. I just run for the bushes. That's why I always bring two paper towels with me in a little pocket of my bottle belt. Thing is, I wear these bright coloured clothes. People can always see me.

Dutchie:)
