Rotator cuff is sore.

Hi all, I am so bummed. My rotator cuff is sore and I don't know what to do. I rested it for a good month and yesterday tried Supercuts. Now today it is hurting again like it did before I rested it. I used very light weights, and it didn't hurt during the dvd. How long does it have to rest do you think? I went to the doctor for it and the xray showed no arthritis. I took anti-inflammatory meds and iced it at night. It felt good before yesterday. Any thoughts? Thanks, Beth

Hi Beth,

I am sorry you are having rotator cuff problems. If you do a search for sore rotator cuff, there are many threads.

I have bursitis and arthritis in my right shoulder. It started flaring up years ago from overuse and improper form. I have been to physical therapy and the chiropractor many times over the years. I think both have helped. Also, I suffered from frozen shoulder for a good year. My advice to you would be to see a physical therapist or sports trainer to find out what is going on and how to deal with it. Sorry to sound so dismal.

I second the suggestion to see a PT. While I didn't necessarily find the PT itself worthwhile (they had me doing upper body exercises that I was already doing at home), they did tell me what exercises to avoid. I think it depends where you have rotator cuff issues, for me, the PT said to avoid overhead presses, overhead triceps, pull overs, etc.

I find the metabolic workouts are very with the overhead press-squat combo. I do front raises or side raises with squats in place. With dumbbell swings, I only lift my arms to horizontal, so about halfway.

Another reason to see a PT is they can determine if you have a strength imbalance. Cathe had a blog post about strength imbalances before Xtrain came out, unfortunately it is fairly common in women who lift weights.

Thanks, you guys. I'm going to see a sports medicine doctor in a week. I hope to get some answers-I don't know if it's torn or just inflamed. It may be a summer of just riding bike for fitness.

Good luck Beth. Will you please let us know how it goes? I am always eager to hear about shoulder information.

A few years ago (June) I went water skiing (1st time in 25 yrs) and damaged my shoulder. I took Ibuprofen for while and ice. I was fine but could not do the shoulder exercises with Cathe. Finally in Dec (our deductibles were all met) I went to a sports med doc, out of curiosity. X-rays showed some inflamation - more Ibuprofen and PT. Nothing improved, doc said I could keep working out, just not to do the ones that hurt. Well that's what I had been doing all along! I am SO NOT a fan of doctors! The only positive thing that came out of all that was that the PTist said I was great shape (thanks Cathe!). Still I could not do the shoulder exercises.

That's when I quit exercising. I did some biking in the summers. Last month I resolved to make Cathe a new habit and my shoulder is great (I'm doing XTrain /LIS rot). I wouldn't wait 2 years like I did, but maybe you will have to rest for a while.
