Ripped and Chiseled

Cathlete
I just tried Jari Love's Ripped and Chiseled for the first time and I liked it. I have only two major criticisms:

1. I've only done it once and already I'm bored with the repetitiousness. The first two sets are great, but I just don't have the patience to do that third set. I had the same problem with Jari's Slim & Lean, which I finally stopped doing because it was just too repetitive.

2. Why is core work always an afterthought to Jari? This workout has NO ab section except for a repeat of the ab workout from Slim & Lean, which is presented as some sort of bonus section which is not part of the workout.

Jari is a good instructor and, quite frankly, I think she puts herself on sale by allowing her workouts to sell for $8 or less. Maybe if she sold them for what they are worth, she would have enough money to film a real abs section, or be able to add premixes so you can more easily avoid those endless repetitions. At the very least, upper and lower body premixes would be very helpful. Okay, I guess that's technically a third major criticism. The workout really needs some premixes.

Otherwise, it's a good, tough workout, and to me, definitely worth the (pitiful) price. I particularly like that some of the back and tricep work is done supine, because that is the most comfortable position for my lower back when I'm lifting weights. In fact, for back work it's pretty much my only option these days because back work involves such heavy weights. The exercises are simple and straighforward and get the job done. I like that style of workout.

Non-Cathe workouts

I agree. I couldn't believe how much Cathe's video's were priced. But, after buying Amy Bento's videos and P90X (trying to get a variety) I realized they are no where near the quality and endurance of Cathe. And it's not like I get tired of Cathe's stuff, because not one video is easy for me. NOT ONE! I won't waste my money on anyone else. Granted, I can get a workout with any video, it's just not the same.

Nancy, I have a lot of the same thoughts about Jari. I was incredibly annoyed to see the same abs section on R&C as Slim & Lean. I do recall her mentioning in one of the DVDs (Ripped to the Core, I think) that abs used to be an afterthought at the end of her personal workouts, so this may explain the attitude . She took a beating from the boards for the recycled abs section on R&C, and the latest one has a new abs segment.

I do like the simplicity, the cost, and I do find them effective when I alternate them with a heavier weight program.

I like Jari

I like her workouts. I have Ripped 1000 and Ripped and Chiseled. I don't do the same strength training workouts each time because yes, they get boring. But I cannot in any way right now afford Cathe's system. Until I can, it's Jari which I had purchased for less than $8.00 each. As for abs, I like to do them separately. In most videos, abs are left to the end and by that time I am ready to hit the showers.

Thanks for cluing me in. I didn't read any of the boards. I should probably do a search on VF for other reviews. For me, core is the most important thing. I need a strong core in order to avoid back injury, and without it I can't even attempt any of the other body part exercises. The Slim and Lean ab workout doesn't even challenge my core, so obviously I was pretty disappointed to see it used again.

My response to R & C was the same as yours -- liked it pretty well, but found it a bit boring and was miffed about the ab work.

As for me, though, I did it twice and just never felt motivated to do it again so I gave it away.

I also like a bit more leg work than Jari does. I could stand for a few less bicep moves and a few more leg moves!

I understand what you're saying, Lastchance. And by the way, I wouldn't want to see Jari using Cathe's price points. But I would be willing to pay, say, $12 for a Jari Love workout that had a few premixes. I don't think Jari's WOs should be in the $5.99 bin with Denise Austin and Richard Simmons. There's something about her I really like. I've had "Get Ripped" for several years, and I still use it to this day. I can't say that about many other WOs I own.

Yes, Nancy, I agree with what you are saying. I see Jari as a middle point between the more expensive instructors (of which Cathe is one--there are others) and the "low" end (and I love that you put Denise Austin in that category--not to be a hater but she's just not my cup of tea). Maybe "low end" is not exactly the term, maybe this group is just more appealing to a mass market thus cheaper to make than other instructors' products.

Her newest workout has two 30 minute sections, which I certainly wouldn't call a premix but it's an option. I think she is trying to adjust what she makes in response to feedback. I do wish her ab work was a bit more challenging.

Thanks to you all for not criticizing me for writing a "review" two years after the WO has been released. I don't pay much attention to release dates, and just buy things when I'm in the mood for them. I always assume there are plenty of people out there like me, who haven't purchased yet, and are wondering what others think.

Hey if you just got it it's new to you, right? There are workouts that I don't buy until way after the initial hype is over. Sometimes it's better to wait until things have settled down and then you can find out if people are still using a workout after time has passed. I still use Ripped & Chiseled and Ripped to the Core of my Jari workouts fairly regularly, but my personal jury is still out on Extremely Ripped (her latest). So ask me a couple of years from now what I think! :D

Okay, now I see there was a whole discussion on this WO back in December, 2007. I'm such a dork. Just pretend this thread is called "Ripped and Chiseled - Update" and let's hear what you think of it a year and a half later, as Cataddict suggested. I agree, Cataddict, first impressions often do not tell the whole story.

I looked at the threads you mentioned from December 2007. A lot of the discussion seemed to be focused on Jari's looks and personal appearance rather than the workout itself. I'm all about the workout, although I admit to being distracted by certain aspects i.e. music, attire, sets, etc.

See you in a year and a half! :D

Actually, I have no idea whether Denise Austin is any good or not, I just hate her voice so much, I can't get past the first minute of any of her workouts!

That's one of the distractions I was talking about---I can't take a perky voice!:p
