RED INK

A few days ago there was a discussion on discipline in the classroom. (Scaring for life because a child’s name being placed on the chalkboard for all to see). There was a good discussion pros and con.

Get this: My daughter a 2nd grade teacher. She was told she could not use “Red Ink” to grade the papers, because it might upset the children.

What a bunch of “PC” “BS”! What are we doing, raising a bunch of whinny wimps. I think it’s more the parents are upset, and can’t handle their child is not doing well. If these parents would work with their children on behavior, and help them study, "they" wouldn’t have to be embarrassed.

No RED INK, give me a break!!!

LOL Bill!!!Thats hilarious. Hey next I bet kids won't be able to use pencils because "Oh gosh they're too sharp"
Is this really happening?? Crazy:eek:

How the heck is your daughter suppose to grade a paper then? That is crazy!!!! My sons are still very young, and not into getting papers graded yet, but I would love for them to see the mistakes that were made on their papers. I do believe that parenting has become somewhat soft. Some for the good and some for the bad. But give me a break, no red ink????

And Adri, you're right, next it will be no pencils!

I would guess the red color is to make it stand out from the rest of the print, pencil or pen on the paper already.

Now they are assuming that red = danger or something? Whoa !

I use purple on timecards - can they use purple - or are some children afraid of Barney?:p

I was giving a presentation at a conference on writing poetry in the foreign language classroom, and we were working with comparisons, taking clichéd comparisons like "white as snow,""red as blood," etc. and changing them, writing from different perspectives. One of the attendees who had the perspective of "teacher" said "red as the ink I correct papers with," and another one adamantly said "No, you don't correct papers in red!" Duh! I do all the time! (Though I do vary, using orange, bright pink, purple, green...it's usually easier, though, for me to judge overall grades for compositions when I use red or a similar color).

Sometimes I think we get too PC. And a lot of things that are 'PC" don't really necessarily have sincere good intentions behind them, they are just following someone's dictated idea of what should be done.

And if red ink will traumatize kids, whatever color you use to replace it will soon be seen to 'traumatize' them. Geesh!

What color are they told to use? Red is good because the contrast makes it easy to see. (though I admit, once we got in a stock of red pens that were violently, bright orangey red, and I felt bad using them. I apologized to the students for how violent my corrections looked that day, and didn't use those pens again!)

By the way, Bill, I find your red sig very traumatic! No doubt, it will affect me in a negative way for the rest of my life. }(

Here's a little something from an educator named Charles Sykes, from a book called "Dumbing Down Our Kids" (it's been wrongly attributed to Bill Gates in many places on the internet).

RULE 1
Life is not fair - get used to it.

RULE 2
The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

RULE 3
You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with car phone, until you earn both.

RULE 4
If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.

RULE 5
Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping they called it Opportunity.

RULE 6
If you mess up,it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

RULE 7
Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

RULE 8
Your school may have done away with winners and losers,
but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

RULE 9
Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

RULE 10
Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

RULE 11
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Great rules Shelley - you can tell the kids have been "babied" if you look around at the teens and early 20 YO people. Definitely feel a sense of entitlement.

Thanks for sharing - I'm gonna keep that one to give to my kids, 17 & 19 for some Food for Thought.

Adri: Don't give them any ideas, they will make them use crayons rather than pencils. (but not red ones)

Jacque: I'm with Shelley, Barney scares me. I heard he likes men.;(
I need to change my "Bill" Sign to a friendlier color.

Kathryn: "if red ink will traumatize kids, whatever color you use to replace it will soon be seen to 'traumatize' them. Geesh!" Exactly!!

Melissa: Oklahoma, believe it or not, one of the most conservative States in the U.S.

Adri's right, next the kids will have to use dull pencils.

Our school system did away with pluses and minuses when grading. Your grade was A,B, C or NI (needs improvement). I complained because I felt it wasn't giving parents enough information. If my daughter went from an A to a B, did she drop from a 99 average to an 81? or did she go from a 91 to an 89? There's a big difference in my book between the two. The school administrator said the only people complaining were the parents of good students. The parents of kids who needed help weren't complaining at all.

It is not doing the kids any favors. They will not learn that reality doesn't care about their feelings, about their self-esteem, and they will face the cruel truth that sometimes you get criticized and corrected for being wrong. I say let the teachers use RED INK!!!

I don't have any kids... but when I read the post I chuckled because I remembered a story that a Real-Estate-Agent-friend of mine told me.. She was a newbie in the field - she had just facilitated an offer on a house for her clients - and the seller's RE agent was making changes to the Offer - in RED ink...

She cried to me - It was an intimidation tactic! X's and lines all in red ink!

It was the funniest thing I heard THEN...and we are talking about PROFESSIONAL adults for goodness sakes!

I work as an editor- and I proof in red - its the only way I notice the changes when I am entering my revisions - The world of PC-ness is something - for sure!

You know, this "let's not hurt any kid's feelings by giving them less than a passing grade" is pretty much encouraging mediocrity. The good students don't get rewarded for their efforts or superior performance, so why should they continue to make those efforts? The less-than-stellar students still pass, even though they shouldn't, so they are not motivated to make more of an effort.

It all seems rather misguided to me.

And by the time they get to college, they assume they'll get a good grade just by showing up (at least sometimes!).

I don't think the ills of our society have been brought about by making distinctions between those that excel and those that don't.

On another subject, but somewhat related, what's this trend (already years old) of having 'graduation' ceremonies for every grade? Ridiculous, IMO, because high school graduation was always a big thing to look forward to, and meant something: a new beginning, a change, entering a new stage of life. Now, since you 'graduate' from kindergarten, first grade, etc. all the way to 12th grade, what makes the HS graduation special?

Oh gosh this was like the funniest topic (besides the Drill Max Chant w/ Me tht Shelly wrote. That was super hilarious!!)
O great dull pencils, school should be fun this year:p
Oh yeah, if you use red crayons or markers, well, lets just say me and the principal will become very good friends}( }( }( I like red. Why can't everyone revolt against a "dull" color like gray?;-)
Cool topic Bill

>That's ridiculous! And maybe we should just give out A's to
>everybody to not upset the children!

Some people think that's what we should do!

"I'm afraid of Barney."

Bwwwahahahahahahaha!!!! You crack me up Shelley!

Great topic Bill. This generation of kids is going to be so screwed up and so unhappy b/c they won't be able to handle authority and constructive criticism. Yikes!!!
