Really, are potatoes so bad???

I just love 'em. I roasted some red skin potatoes tonight in some olive oil, and they were so good, I ate too many. I love them roasted, baked, sauteed, fried, boiled, in salads, you name it. Are they really as bad as everyone says??? Say it isn't so!

I love potatoes too...I think its just like everything else, you can find two articles or books saying potatoes are bad, two that say they are fine, two diet plans that advocate eating them, two that say avoid it. And this goes for just about anything.

I get so flabbergasted trying to figure out what to eat and not to eat sometimes it is agony!! Curses!! LOL

I would guess the idea is moderation. I mean a potato is a natural 'clean' food even if it is a starch. But I am no expert.

I'm still looking for that pill that lets you eat whatever you want and be at your ideal weight. Is that available over the counter yet?

I come from a long line of Irish who have survived for centuries eating potatoes. Everything in moderation.

Chipotle Mashed Potatoes using Yukon Gold potatoes....YUM!!!!!! Yes, in moderation of course...http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/_950/wink.gif[/img]

Delfin, I love potatoes just the way you described! That's the kind of food I would also pick at, until either they were all gone or I had just eaten way too many and finally felt too stuffed. Other foods like that for me are potato salad and coleslaw, which I had recently.

You didn''t mention if you cooked anything else? Did you eat chicken with those potatoes? Broccoli? ANYTHING else?

I don't believe potatoes are bad. How can they be bad? Rotten squid, now that's bad--but you'll never see red potatoes and olive oil on Fear Factor. What I do believe is that they are a quickly digested simple starch, so while they stuff you up somethin' good, they don't leave you satisfied for as long as a more complex carb would, or may mess with your blood sugar a bit if you're sensitive that way.

I hate to proselytize about yet another food book, but I just feel COMPELLED to say that reading "Intuitive Eating" has saved me from Eating Analysis Insanity. Just spreading the word, at the risk of being obnoxious. (I risk things late at night)

Gisela,

I agree with you about the Intuitive Eating book - it sets you straight with all the crazy food fears we have. Practice listening to your body, don't overdo it, don't "underdo" it!

Take care and listen to your body!

A potato itself is a clean, nutritious, low-fat, high-quality food. The only problem with white potatoes is that they have a high score on the Glycemic Index, which means they can cause cravings.

So, observe yourself. Do you find that an hour or two after eating a potato you are eating other foods that contain simple sugars like bread or sweets? If so, then you might want to avoid white potatoes (sweet potatoes have a low GI score and are fine to eat). It's not the potato itself that is bad for you, but rather its potential for leading you to eat other, less nutritious foods.

I love potatoes! I steamed some golden potatoes last night and they were delish. I think it's what you put on a potatoe that makes them bad. But, that goes for everything, right?

I think eating a lot of potatoes by themselves, or with lots of 'stuff' on is bad, and potatoes in general should be eaten in moderation.

Most non-organic potatoes are genetically engineered nowdays (usually to make them easier to ship or store or something, and not to benefit the consumer).

Some organic potatoes with the skins on served with some low glycemic food would be fine.

Just make sure your potatoes don't have any green on the skins--that's the sign of a toxin that develops on potatoes exposed to light.

Potatoes are so good for you. The best buy is to buy the lower starch kind of potatoes - like your red bliss, or salad potatoes, rather than your Idaho bakers. Watch your portions and what you put on them (no tons of butter). Sweet potatoes are amazingly healthy - high in beta carotene, fiber (keep the skins on all potatoes whenever possible). Definitely worth keeping in your diet. Like eveything else - practice moderation and you're fine.

i love the skin on white potatoes but i always thought that the skin on sweet potatoes was bad for u?

Actually, the skin of white potatoes is bad for you if it has any green on. The skin of sweet potatoes is just rather tough and not pleasant to eat. I only eat it if I've scrubbed them well, and they are sliced and cooked.

I have found that a potato is one of the easiest things to throw in my lunch bag for work! Scrub it well, toss in the bag with the rest of my food and when I get to work, microwave it for a quick, baked potato! I don't do it often, maybe 1-2/month, but then I am not much of a potato eater anymore. Oh, that reminds me, I must bake some brown rice today!
