? re: protein powder

I never had a need to ask my ObGyn, but did any of you ever ask your doctor if it was okay to still use protein powder? Lately I've noticed I've not been eating much in the way of protein, especially for breakfast and would like to go back to making smoothies with protein powder, but I don't know if it is okay. The powder I have is whey protein.

Thanks!

I am a bit crazy when it comes to stuff like that. When I was preggars, and even now when I am nursing, I didn't have anything that wasn't natural. No caffiene, sugar substitues, any meat or dairy with hormones, nothing synthetic. I don't see the harm in protein supplements, though I am not really sure. You really do need protien though, now more than ever. I really don't see how it can hurt. Hopefully someone with more wisdom will come along.....

Hi,
I never used protien or anything unnatural while pregnant both times. I do not trust protien powders while pregnant because there are some chemicals in the powder that could harm the baby. Just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't use it until after the baby is born. I would not use it while nursing either if you're planning on to nurse your baby. Some doctors may say yes but what do they really know?? I do not trust everything the doctor says either. Just for the peace of mind, try to avoid it if you can. There are PLENTY of other food that contain protien other than meat. You have nuts, beans, whole grains, eggs, etc.... Also, it's possible your body might not need more protien right now. You might have enough protien in you for now which is why you're not craving protien. I felt that way with my second baby and my doctor said it's a no big deal but I have to make sure I do not go too long without protien. Hope this helps.

I would think it would depend on the type of protein powder being used, as some have additives that others don't. I can't see any reason not to use a powder that is genuine protein. With my first pregnancy I was so nauseated in the first trimester that I was concerned that I wasn't getting enough vitamins and minerals, so I drank a can of Vanilla Boost once a day for a few weeks. As Lisa said, if you are concerned about your protein intake and the powder, there are a number of other ways to get it.

Cheers,
Sandra

Thanks everyone! I was leery to try the protein powder due to the possible additives. I was just thinking that it would probably be the easiest way to get my protein, but I will find another way. Actually I think that adding cottage cheese should take care of it and if I blend it well enough into the smoothie then I won't be able to taste it in there. I personally don't care for plain cottage cheese.

Thanks for all of your responses.

My doctor examined the ingrediant list on my PP and thought that it was fortified with too many vitamins and that in conjunction with the prenatal vitamin, I would be getting too much. Too much vitamins not being good for you either.

Isn't it great? TOO many vitamins...lol I know that is true but it just cracks me up. It's almost like saying you can be "TOO healthy" or something. :p

I've read the same thing about too many vitamins causing medical problems too. I wonder if it is considered overdosing in this instance. That is why you have to be very careful when giving children vitamins because there is a possibility that it could harm them, especially if they think they are candy and try to sneak them from the cabinet.

I agree with Lisa, you have to be careful. But I asked to my doctor when I was pregnant couple of months ago. His specialty is in sports medicine and his wife is pregnant. He saw it with good eyes. I have one from Puritan Pride, mainly natural ingredients. Anyway I was scared and didn't use it.
Have you tried the cottage cheese that comes with fruits as a ready to eat snack. I love it with strawberry. I also bought the plain one and mix it with small pieces of Guava paste... Love it!
