Racewalking

Hi everyone!

I have a question about racewalking. Do any of you do this on a treadmill, or mostly outdoors? I would like to try it, but would probably only do it indoors on a treadmill. Also, on a treadmill, at what speed (mph) is it considered racewalking? How long must your workout be to be really effective? I normally try running or do a run/walk, but lately the running has hurt my knees. I am looking to lose about 15 lbs. I also workout with Cathe weight and cardio tapes, but like to mix it up with crosstraining. Thanks in advance for your help!

P.S. any good books out there on this topic? Thanks!!!

I've been learning racewalking and it's a real workout for sure. From what I have read and heard about the sport one is racewalking at the 13 minute mile pace along with the proper official racewalk form.

Walking Fast by Therese Ikonian is a good book and there was an article in Muscle and Fitness for Women a few months ago on the sport also.

Form is the key, and you CAN do it on a treadmill. You may want to do it outside at first to get used to it before you do it on a treadmill, so you can concentrate more on form instead of whether you're going to fall off the treadmill. Using fast paced music is a good tool, also.

I've racewalked since 1991, and never had an injury related to it.
