Question to you Experienced Lifters

Cathlete
Hi, this likely sounds like an obvious question but I figured I'd ask anyway, ;) since I am still relatively new to this.
Are Hex/Trap Bars only available in the Olympic plate circumference? I have been looking for a little while as I am having to cut out most hip hinging now/very soon as I very likely have Iliopsoas bursitis ....I will not know for certain 'till I get the CT Scan the Doc ordered & as some of you know, the line up for these in Canada can be very long, but that is what she thinks has been going on with my left side (I have been having foot troubles too which seems to be coming from the hip). Anyway, from what I have seen online & scoping the Craigslist ads etc., they all require Olympic plates. Although I do remember way back in the 80's that my brother had one which took standard plates. I cannot afford to get into the business of different/more/more costly plates.

Many Thanks!!

Hi Elsie,

Aww Elsie I hope you find a way around all this, get some workout done while having fun.:)

The Hex/Trap Bar being mostly used in Gym, they are designed for HEAVY duty lift. What you need is less than 50mm
width. Most standard bars are about 30 mm width. Sorry about the measurement, I am used to metric measurements.
Feel free to convert in inches. Basically you need a Hex/Trap bar made in standard width measurements.

If you have a set of barbell at home and are happy with it, call the manufacturer you purchased from and ask.
I did and would if I need to add a Hex trap bar --- Well I do not know how I would hide that LOL --- I do know how I
would justify that.

Anyway,On a serious note, this one below was designed in a standard width + olympic sleeves. So yes
definitely you can found one but you probably need to shop further and eventually make some phone calls.
You may experience difficulties finding a used on.:);)

Here are details of the bar:

Elsie,
They do exist
Includes Standard and Olympic Sleeves
Oh, thank you Nathalie & Justine for all of that info. :) I am super happy to know that they are out there. Somewhere. lol. As you said, I just have to keep on looking. Dang expensive though right?!!
As of now, I am finding I am actually okay with much lower body work. Things that aggravate & that I have been paying attention to modify are lunges (particularly side ones), shallow/er squats, wall squats, and floor work involving lateral rotation and repetitive flexion. I have been subbing lunges with 1-legged deadlifts with good results.
I have been reading Eric Cressey and some other lifting writers who use the hex for easing back into lower body work/deadlifts and I have heard of local skiiers using it in the off-season for rehab, so I thought I would give it a go when/after my PT agrees. By the weight of it (yeah that it why it costs so much ship I suppose), I could use it just as is without plates! lol. Deadlifts have done marvelous things for my body, especially for spinal issues and it would break my heart to give it up. I mean I will if I have to, but I do not want to!

Sorry for the long windedness.

I've heard that ilioppsoas bursitis is very painful. Will you be having a steroid injection? I'm finding landmine lunges more comfortable than standard lunges at the moment. I think they keep me more upright (darn my anterior pelvic tilt). I've also been doing narrower stance squats, which seems to put more emphasis on my quads, and feels easier on my lower back. Just random thoughts.....
Best of luck

I agree with this above.
I am sure you can have it made by a friend.:) If you or your DH know any handy friend willing to help, it will
work out a lot less expensive.

Hope you get good news from your PT. Interesting thread Elsie;)

You can go to a trade school or community type college that teaches welding. They will build you one for free usually. My dh is a welding engineer and just recently his company had the them teach classes to high school girls. Its a program introducing girls to stem classes and traditional male professions.

We have son so my dh was not use to working with girls LOL. He was nervous but ended up really enjoying teaching the class.

So anyway I'm not sure how Canadians teach trade but just thought I would mention it. The schools really like to give the kids a new challenge. The trap bar is a simple weld but the kids would need to do some geometry/weight/metal type plus the weld so it would be a good project.

Hmmm, I am ALL for this. We have a couple of polytechnic/trade schools here. I get my roots done at the hair academy nearly all of the time. :D
I would not have thought of this though Cafelatte. Thank you. I did not even realize that they could be made like that until you and Nathalie mentioned it here. I really ought to know more about steel!!

It has truly been a SOB lately! Until I know exactly what is going on, I was going to wait on the injections. It has been top of mind though when it is bothering me, especially when I cannot stand to get home on the train. (requires standing for nearly two hours sometimes ....I used to work standing almost all day. I do not think I could do that now). Anyway, now I am just complaing .........lol
