Question re: Wt training for a Mesomorph type

With this body type, and needing 5 - 7 lbs to go for wt loss, plus gaining muscle strength, what type of exercise regimen should I do for upper body muscle gain and lower body toning and decreasing fat?
I've been doing a rotation of variety s/h, lt wt hi rep, low wt low rep, circuit, etc., varying it week by week. Could I gain more upper with heavier wt/low rep? I'll be away w/hubby for minor surgery until Monday. Any help would be very appreciated.
