Question re. AOS Providence

Hello, kettlebellers.

Do you go as deep into squats as Anthony does? Does anyone know what the purpose/advantage is to going that deep rather than to, say, parallel? I sometimes worry about my knees with this move. Should I worry, or just go for it? (My knees are 40 years old, BTW. So am I.)

Thanks for any input you can give. Have a great night!

Not as deep

I don't go as deep as he does, but am working toward it. I think your range of motion will improve in time. By the way, my knees are 47 and somewhat challenged from years of running.

I really like Providence and do it often. I've moved up in the weights that I use fairly quickly.

Remember, Anthony has been doing this for ages and he is very fit! When in doubt, check out the tutorial info on his website!

The purpose/advantage of deeper squatting is that it loads & works the glutes and hammies more. And some would argue that it is safer on the knee than parallell squats.

I agree with the above poster in that you should do what you can and work on improving from there.

I just got AOS Providence - and I am doing the squats almost as deeply, but not nearly as rapidly. My knees are also 47 and they prefer to be asked nicely :) In general, I find the lower end of the squat to be more comfortable, perhaps that is strange, because I usually 'flunk' hamstring flexibility measures, but it seems easier to do those low, and also the deadlifts, as long as I enter the movement carefully and with good core support.

I'm a very new to kettlebells, so this is definitely NOT a comment on what the correct form should be!

Good God no....but I'm trying. I'm 46 this week but I think my knees turn 52.

The last time I did Providence I finally figured out why it was that I always got so sore it would take me DAYS to recover: I'd been treating every exercise where Anthony bends his knees as a DEEP squat when, in most moves, he's doing a much more shallow squat! That's a whole lotta deep squattin'. I just got so caught up I wasn't noticing how often I was making the moves harder. But when I actually am supposed to deep squat I'm going about as deep as Anthony.
