Question on Spinervals

Okay, crawls back into her little hole. It says it right on their webpage. Never mind...

But I am curious as to which one I should start with.

I have Lean & Mean and also have Enter The Red Zone. These are from the Fitness series (more introductory, but believe me, still tough, tough). You will get your heart rate up there big time! Enter The Red Zone is all women! I also have the first Aerobase (from the Competition series), more of a steady state cardio and you will sweat buckets. Be sure and have a water bottle nearby and a fan on you!

It's been about 5 weeks since I've done these as I've had a cold and didn't want to tax my poor lungs. I need to start back in though.

By the way, I do these with a regular roadbike on a trainer.

Hi Jeanette,

I am a little confused, so this may seem like a stupid question. I am very into spinning right now at the YMCA. I was considering buying a Schwinn spinning bike and was looking into various videos so I could simulate the classes at home. I checked into the various Spinerval descriptions, and it seems that the resistance settings/terms are different than if you are on a spinning bike with just a resistance knob. Are spinervals geared toward trainers and real bikes, or are they just as easily performed on spinning bikes? I am not familiar with the different gears on a road bike. I would love to bike outdoors, but I have a poor sense of balance on a bike, and not enough free time to practice with my two year old keeping me busy. I hope this is not too stupid a question. Thanks for the patience.

Actually, the Spinervals I have show riders on spinning bikes (with resistance settings) and bikes with trainers. Coach Troy will tell you the resistance setting to turn the knob to AND he will tell which chainring (front) and gear (behind) to use, so yes, they are geared to both spin bikes and regular bikes on trainers.

If he tells you a certain resistance and you can't finish the exercise or set at that resistance, definitely back down. You'll get a feel for what you can do. He's big into the cadence (or tempo of pedaling). On some exercises, he will have you pedaling at a cadence of at least 90 rpm's, sometimes way up over 100 rpm's. That's pretty fast. If you can't pedal that fast, then definitely go for less resistance to keep the cadence up.

Hope this helps.

Jeanette - thanks!!! As I was looking into the Spinervals, I realized that I actually have Troy's first tape ever - the Cycle-robx tape. It is good, just too short. I'm going to order some of the DVD's today. It's a fabulous idea and I'll tell ya - if you use a trainer and a bike, especially if you ride outdoors, too, you'll really increase your times and your fitness level - for either mountain or road biking.

Hi Christine:

I noticed you are from San Jose. Did you get to see the time trials for The Tour of California today? I have to wait until 10 p.m. tonite on ESPN2 to see who won the stage.

Thanks Jeanette,

I was looking again at some of the Spinerval descriptions and it does say you can use a spinning bike, I was just a bit nervous when I read 'Tension 5/Big Gear 11 & 12' which I am completely clueless about. But the review/descriptions look so intense, I am definitely re-entertaining the idea of purchasing a spin bike for my home.

No, I did not catch it - can you believe that?!? I'm a big cycling fan, too. I can tell you who won the stage, though, if you're interested...

Hi Christine:
I did get to watch the time trial on ESPN2 last night. It's amazing how fast they can book and Floyd's position, what can I say? He reminded me of a praying mantis, but wow, he blew them all away! I'm glad that it's not on any later than 10 p.m. I'm looking forward to watching tonite and seeing the ride from Monterey to San Luis Obispo.

Do you cycle any of those nice roads that I've been seeing? A few girlfriends and myself spent a few cycling days in the wine country 2 summers ago. We had a great time. I sure want to go back there and do more.
