Question for those who've had meniscus surgery

I'm going tomorrow to have mine repaired. I'm not at all nervous for the surgery, but the recovery part is stressing me out! How long was it before you were back to exercising?
My doctor said it would be a fairly easy recovery and that I'd be walking around in no time, but I want to know when I'll be able to run and step with Cathe again. What were your experiences?

I had the surgery at the end of January. I pretty much stuck to just following the doctors stretches and exercises for my knee for two weeks. I continued to do upper body workouts through that time. According to my calender, I was trying low impact step workouts without any platform the third week, along with some stationary bike work. Oh, and some yoga to help increase the stretching.

The improvements seemed to come in spurts. I'd wake up one day and find my knee felt a lot better, then it would feel the same for a week, until I'd notice another big improvement.

I think I started stepping with one platform at 5-6 weeks. We took a vacation to the Caribbean at 6 weeks and I did a lot of hiking and snorkeling, which seemed to do wonders for my knee. Good excuse to take a vacation, don't you think?

I'd have to honestly say it hasn't been until this week, 10 weeks post surgery, that I feel like my old self when stepping, but I had to deal with a bout of shingles a couple weeks ago, that set me back some. I used an 8 inch platform for the first time today. My knee still feels stiff, and it makes a popping sound sometimes, but it doens't hurt or feel weak.

Good luck and try not to get discouraged if you don't think it's healing quickly enough. Believe me, it will!

Your reply was exactly what I was looking for; an HONEST time frame. My surgery went well, today is day four and I'm trying to go without crutches today. My surgeon said there was a lot more damage than expected, but I'm feeling ok. I go back to the orthopedist Monday and I'm guessing he'll give me more instructions then.
What did you start with as far as exercise? I'm going to start an upper body rotation today, but as far as cardio, what should I do? I've gotten several recommendations for swimming, but that's not an option for me right now. Biking, maybe? I'm scared I might damage something in the process. Ahhh! I'm not one to be patient!
