question for moms of crawlers or walkers

hi everyone! i was hoping for a bit of advice...

finn is not quite crawling yet (and i am afraid he will go straight to walking as he loves to pull himself up to stand). i am in the habit of leaving him not contained but on the floor (he is not mobile yet) while i go switch laundry or go in the bathroom/kitchen/etc.... how do you contain your little ones when you need to (such as when working out)? on our 2nd floor i can use his crib. i have nothing set up for first floor or basement which is where i exercise.

thanks for any help.

I can relate to having the same problem. We found an indoor/outdoor
play pen ,they are actual pieces you put together. I will
find out the name. They were plastic dividers you could click
together that you could buy additional inserts to make the space
bigger. Along the same lines gates but they connect. Jennifer was able to crawl/roll all around safely. I would on occasion put her into the exersaucer but was too nervous to go upstairs and take a shower.
I am sure it would be okay since its stationary and you can
raise the seat higher/lower. I watched her trying to get out
and bending forward even at eight months. I couldn't trust.
I don't have the situation too often since I get ready for work
when Jennifer is sleeping but there have been times she's up and
I put her into the play pen. I take it Finn is too big for the
swing /bouncy seat? The swing was great too but again temporary
solutions. Good Luck. I too would like to know what other Mom's
do.

yes, he is just about out of the bouncy seat and swing. i too use the exersaucer for a very very quick thing but not for long as finn uses it like a trampoline - he is so funny. i think a pack and play would work, it just seems so confining, although i guess that is what i am after. a play yard type thing may be better in my basement so he could safely move around while i exercise, although usually i am done when he gets up.

thanks for the advice.

Hi Morris. I meant to post earlier & just ran out of time! I have never been a big fan of playpens b/c I am a firm believer of letting kids explore.

When exercising I usually plop my wee-ones in the corner with a bunch of toys, drinks, snacks, and anything else that may entertain them for 60 minutes.

For the most part I exercise when they are sleeping. It normally goes like this:
1. Wake up and put workout clothes on
2. Eat breakfast (feed kids) put workout shoes on
3. Play with kids
4. Prepare my living room for workout
5. Get snacks for kids (daydream about my workout)
6. Play with kids until they get drowsy
7. Put DVD in player, prep TV to channel 3
8. Wait of wee one to fall asleep...very gently put him down
9. RUN to DVD player and press PLAY & PRAY that wee one won't wake up for 60 minuts
10. If wee one sleeps entire time, REJOICE and selfishishly hope he can also sleep through a quick shower!!!

Good luck, it's nice to hear from you!

melanie, you are too funny! i too workout when my little guy is asleep, usually at 4:30 in the morning (after all, i don't need sleep, do i)? but occasionally, especially when dh is traveling, i need to workout later in the day. finn is pretty good on his own watching me do my thing. but i know very very soon he will be up and running! hopfully he will enjoy my extra step and go right along with me. my mornings are funny though, b/c i do count down the minutes i have left, praying he will sleep thru. if i get to stretch, it is indeed a bonus!

how are all of yours? any thoughts on another:)? finn is now 7.5 months and just so very very funny. i feel so fortunate.

I once tried to get up early to workout...only to find out my little ones adjust also...getting up earlier and earlier and earlier. IT DOESN'T WORK! At least for me. ;)
Yes, I'd like to have number 4, Jadon still nurses quite a bit...so I imagine nothing will happen in that department until he's weaned more!!
I can't believe Finn is 7 1/2 mos old already. Wow! Are you thinking of another one as well?

if i could be pregnant right now, i would be:)

i am nursiong full time too, so nothing will happen at least until i wean finn when he is a year. i had a hard time getting pregnant with him - it seeems my hormones are not really up to par. i had to use injectable hormones and time things.... i am hopefully my hormones will pop into normal gear now as they worked fine thru pregnancy, delivery, but i will go the same route again if i need to as i just love having a little one (who is getting so big). how long do you plan to nurse?

as for mornings, finn too tried getting up earlier and earlier for about 3 months - it drove me crazy. but now he is back to getting up around 5:45 or 6am, so i am fortunate, especially when dh is gone and i have to fit things in myself.

My kids are not allowed to get up until 7am. I try my best to discourage them from getting up before them. So far so good.
I have been slowly weaning baby Jadon (turned one on Thanksgiving). I'll hold onto evening nursing as long as he's interested (or practical). I obviously won't be nursing him until he's 10 or anything!!!!!

I didn't realize you had difficulty conceiving. It makes me feel so fortunate that we've been so fertile.

There's a 10K in April. I haven't run since September. I really want to do it, then I think to myself...will I be pregnant then? It's so funny how much your life changes before, during, after pregnancies! It's all in the "season", right?

I cannot imagine my DH being gone so much. That must be tough for you. Do you have family around or a strong support group, if needed?

Where do you live? Is the weather nice enough to go running yet?

my family is very far away, and i dearly miss family when dh is gone. we live in maine, and while it has been too cold even for me to run outside, i usually go yearround. my limit is 10 degrees. luckily i have a treadmill in my house, and truthfully, i don't mind it too much for short periods of time. i just cannot give up running all together. you are so right about how things change with pregnancy. i am so excited to see how things go my next time around - will i feel as good? as active? be as healthy? will we have as amazing a little person? i hope we get pregnant on our own, but, things have a way of working out how they are supposed to i think.

i am trying to craft a better support network as family is so far away. it isn't easy though. i have a wonderful parttime job and in someways feel closer to my coworkers than my friends. i think this is also why i gravitated to the forums so much - it is a way to talk and connect to people. and of course ask all my questions:)it would be nice, though, when dh is gone, to have some sort of backup. it will just take time i think

the 10k sounds like fun. where do you live again? it is in my mind it is someplace cold! thanks goodness for cathe dvds to break up the winter!

Morris, Ms. Ashley is now crawling and rather quickly around the house. I usually let her roam as home is pretty childproof. I exercise in my unfinished basement. I either put her in the swing or pac and play with toys. I strongly recommend getting a pac and play as they store /travel well.

ashley is crawling? where does the time go? finn is trying so hard to get his little body moving and generally just wants to stand up (holding on to me of course). is she still a little thing? finn is rapidly gaining, despite his aversion to cereal and anything with substance. for the last month he'd only eat peas and green beans. now i can confidently say he will eat squash and bannannas too. such a funny little guy. i cannot wait until he can eat with us and not just want jarred foods. any plans for a third child?

Morris, Ashley is a chow hound and loves finger foods-crackers etc as well as her baby food. She has put on a little meat but is still tiny and wears 3-6 month clothes. No desire to have a 3rd child. 2 is plenty, and I wanted girls so I am set.

I live in cold Minnesota!

Shopaholic, nice to see you!!! Its hard to believe we have THREE year old already, and we 'met' over FOUR years ago!!!! Amazing!

I'm starting to itch to run now. I talked to a couple of customers today that were training for marathons. Hmmmmmmmmm. Someday!

We also have no family around. Closest family is 8 hrs away. We do have each other, DH doesn't travel for work (he's a stay-at-home Daddy). I do work for a small business and I'm pretty close with my coworkers. I'm an active member of my church. I'm looking to meet some more people...and a closer support group myself. I'm going to begin MOPS this Tuesday....which me luck!!

Forums are great for support! LOVE THEM!

Hi Melanie~
I am another Minnesota Mom of 3 little boys! I have emailed you in the past to ask you ?'s, but I am not sure if you remember. Anyhow, I also have 3 boys. Noah is 10, Abraham is 6 and baby Gideon is 10 months. We are also looking forward to baby #4. I just turned 35 and my dh is 37. I am so worried that we are getting to old. We woul;d love a baby girl to add to our family (or boy of course). I remember you are a pharmasist. I am a school social worker (I work part time). My dh is a youth minister/religion teacher at Cretin-Derham hall. It seems like you and I have a lot in common. (except I am still 15 lbs. away from my prepregnancy weight....and you lost your baby weight in weeks!!:)

I hope all is well. It would be fun to keep in touch!
Take care!!!
Becca!!:)

MOPS is "Mothers Of Preschoolers". It meets twice a month at my church. It's a nationwide organization...you should see if you have one by you. The moms meet for two hours or so & socialize, do arts/crafts, and just have fun bonding. The children have their own classes where they can interact with kids their own ages. It's great for us b/c my boys don't go to daycare & it's nice for them to gain some social skills.

Becca, thanks for your e-mail. I will e-mail you back a little later tonight. ;)
