question for ange about power yoga

Hi ange (or anyone else who can give me some advice),
I noticed that you mentioned in another post that you have been doing alot of power yoga lately. I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions about it. I am interested in it because I would like something new. I am really getting tired of weight training with all the lunges and squats and bench presses. They are effective, but I am just becoming very bored with the exercises. But I have read that power yoga can take the place of a weight workout. Is this true? Do you think I could use power yoga for say a 6 to 8 week rotation twice a week in place of my weight workouts (and continue my cardio of course)? If I did what kind of changes do you think I would notice? Would I gain definition? Strength? or lose it?

Also, I like really intense workouts. If they are not intense I get bored and will not complete them. Can you recommend a good INTENSE power yoga video for beginners? I am pretty fit so I don't think I'll have much of a problem catching on.

Thanks in advance for any advice that anyone can give!! I appreciate it greatly!!

Hi Kristie,
Just bumping this up because I would love to hear the answer myself. So many different forms of exercise, so little time!

Hey Lisa,
Check out the post "bryan kest videos question". I asked some of these same questions there. Hopefully someone will respond.

Kristie,
I started doing power yoga about 4 months ago. I was training for a marathon which I completed Sunday. I stopped weight training and started doing ashtanga power yoga and now I am totally hooked. I am finally seeing defined muscles in my arms and my legs are much leaner. I do all three of Bryan Kest's videos and Baron Baptiste's power yoga videos. I thought I was strong from lifting weights but when I started lifing my own body weight, I realized I was not as strong as I thought. I plan to start back with my video rotation when my body heals from the marathon. I will do intense aerobics one day and power yoga the next. Power Yoga has really helped lean me out and I cannot say enough postive things about it. I just recently ordered Grace Lazenby's All the right moves, and I will add that video into my rotation. BTW, I lost several inches in places I never could, even with running and lifing weights. Ashtanga is considered flowing yoga so their is some cardio benefits as will as toning, and strenth benefits. I may go back to weight training later but right now, I am seeing and feeling really good results.

Hi Ange,
Thanks for your response. It sounds like power yoga has been very good for you. I'm getting mixed messages from others though. Others have said that it doesn't necessarily help them lose weight. But I guess I'll have to see for myself. I only need to lose 5 lbs give or take a couple so that it not my major priority. I just want to find something to build strength and tone that I like better than weight training for a while. It sounds like power yoga may be the key. I did the kest 1 tape last night and I liked it. It didn't make me sweat though like MIS or PH do but I guess that is okay since I'm just starting out. In your opinion, how many times a week should I do power yoga in order to build strength and tone? I currently weight train (total body) twice a week and do cardio 4 times. How many times a week did you do it to see your results? Thanks for your help!!!

Kristie,
I understand this is Cathe's forum and I feel somewhat strange talking about Power Yoga on her forum. You can email me at
angegal_2000@yahoo and I will be happy :) to answer any questions for you regarding power yoga and my rotation.

Hi Ange!

Hope you don't mind me butting in here. You are free to talk about other videos on the "Open Discussion" Forum. Just thought I'd pass that on. Cathe encourages mixing up your routine with different rotations. Hope I am not out of place here.

Kristie, I failed to mention that the reason these tapes did not help me lose weight is because I had been eating too much. Power Yoga is suppose to help you lose weight and add definition to your muscles, because you are using your own weight. I'm sure if you stuck to it, like my friends, you too will see amazing results. I plan to do the same, once I'm finished with the rotation I'm on now, and currently I'm still doing one or two power yoga a week.

RE: eating too much

Lourdy, I hear you on the eating too much thing. I cannot stop eating too much myself!! It's so hard not to. All the good stuff there is to eat. Food is just too darn good. And when I work out hard I just flat out feel like I deserve it!
