Question for all you KBers out there

I have the opportunity to attend an intro to kettlebells workshop next week. It's three hours long from 11-2. I'm signed up to run in our local Jingle Bell Run 5k at 4:15. So my question for all you kettlebellers is this: Do you think I'll be too wiped out to run the 5k after learning some swings, etc? Right now I'm doing a one body part/day rotation with 2-3 days of running and I run right after lifting with no problem, but I'm worried that the KBs might be too taxing. What do you guys think?

I really want to go-the instructor is RKC certified and his gym looks fab and it's only $30!

Thanks!

Oh Klaudia I have no idea, but I wanted to say HOW COOL, I hope it works out for you!!

<---patiently waiting for the FedEx man to bring my shiny new KB!!:D

I hope this doesn't disappoint you, but yes--I think you'll be MUCH too tired to run the race. Kettlebells aren't just about doing a few swings. Mentally, it's an incredibly exhausting workout. Perfect form is crucial and you'll be learning a lot. I know you won't be doing Kettlebell exercises for the full three hours since there will probably be breaks and a lot of form instruction, but most people can't do Kettlebell workouts for more than 30-40 minutes at a time. In fact, you're not supposed to. It's incredibly taxing on both the body and the mind.

I don't think you'll be able to run the race but I'm soooo jealous of the workshop you're going to! How wonderful! You're going to have a blast and learn sooooooooooo much! Have a great time and be sure to fill us in on how the day went!

On the other hand, the 3 hour session won't be 3 hours of continued exercise, you never expend as many calories/as much energy learning a workout as when you know the moves and then do the workout and the race is only a 5k. If you are used to running, used to pushing hard in the short term, I say go for it and rest a couple of days after it.

Two good opportunities, could be hard to pass either up!

It really depends if you are running the 5K for fun or if you are trying to set a PR. I have done 5K runs and then worked out with kettlebells later in the afternoon and it didn't bother me too much. If it's a workshop and you are just learning movements you will probably be using a lighter weight anyway.

It if was me, I would do both but I'm weird.

Like Allison said, kettlebell workouts are pretty taxing, but, since this one is a learning workshop, just use a lighter weight (like Jane suggested) and listen to your body. :)

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to go ahead and do both. I'm not running the race for a PR, so there's no pressure and I'll just take it easy at the seminar and watch more and move less:) I'm so excited to have found an intructor that's relatively close and I don't want to pass up the chance-the next beginner seminar won't be til springtime.

Wish me luck:)
