Question for all moms about summer vacation and exercise????

Hi Moms,

Just wondering what you will do now that summer vacation is quickly approaching? I get up at 5A now to work out (except if we have a bad night here). I usually work out for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. I really don't want to keep up with that schedule for the summer. We stay up later during the break. In previous years, I would take the kids to the gym about 9A, but now that I'm addicted to my Cathe work outs I want to keep working out at home. At least at the gym they had other kids to play with and I know someone is watching them. There's all kinds of stuff for them to do there. The classes are terrible though!

Also, do you do different types of work outs during the break? I was thinking of doing more circuit work outs for the sake of time. Or would you alternate cardio one day, and weights the next?

I really don't know how to fit all of this in? Now that my body is used to doing so much more, I definitely don't want to stop.

HELP! If your kids are grown up, what did you do in the past? Or how are you moms with little ones going to manage this summer?

Thanks, Dallas

Well I don't want to stop come down on my workouts just because my children will be home. O.k., they will soon be 15 and 17 so the only thing different for me is that I can expect them to laugh at me when I am making my screwed up faces because I am working til muscle failure, etc. I guess I will get use to it alittle more. I know they will want their friends over more too so I guess I will be entertaining them all. LOL! Then there is the local pool that they will want to go and my favorite...hiking up in the mountains! I hate to do this by myself for fear of freaks so it will be nice to venture out together.

I just started worrying about this issue as well. I think I'm going to have to cut back a little even though I don't want to. Right now, I do strength in the morning and cardio in the evening. I think I'm just going to do shorter strength workouts in the mornings and see how that goes.

I'll be interested in seeing how the other moms are planning on dealing with summer break and working out!

Good luck!

Well, I am in the same boat. Right now I work FT and get up to workout from 4:30am to 6am. I am resigning my job to become a SAHM (last day is 2 weeks from tomorrow) and I am very worried about this. My boys are 7 and 4. My kids "allow me" to workout without any interruptions if I am already exercising when they wake up...does that make sense? If they get out of bed and I am already in my basement, they play quietly or watch TV till I am done. I just can't start a workout in the middle of the day with both of them there. I have a YMCA membership, but like you, I LOVE my Cathe workouts. Here is my plan:

I am going to continue getting up early...it just works out best for me that way for the rest of my day. I cannot exercise with them awake. On the days that I am not able or willing to get up early, I will have to sacrifice my Cathe and go to the Y. I plan on adding swimming to my routine too. If I will be doing weights at the Y, I will take one of my Cathe spreadsheets with me and follow that. But, bottom line for me, is that I am going to continue to try my early morning workouts and go from there.

Finally, I have spoken with other moms/friends in my neighborhood and we are going to try switching kids. I will watch my friend's kids while she takes her hour or so to workout, and vice versa. I am not going to completely rely on this, but that is the plan if I need to get a workout in in the middle of the day.

Gayle, Congrats on resigning from your job. That was a big step. :) I love staying home with my kids.

This summer I am not planning any activities except for swimming lessons. We are hanging at the beach, and keeping it simple.

As far as workouts, my kids are 2 and 4, sometimes the evenings are unpredictable, so morning workouts before they wake are not always possible. I like to workout in the aftenoons. I will do Cathe while my 2 year old naps, and my 4 year old watches me or a movie in another room. I run when my hubby gets home from work, or when he is home he watches the kids.

I know Charlotte, I want to leave plenty of time to go swimming, parks, etc. All the fun stuff! So, I really don't want to work out during the day.

Erica, I think that takes even more motivation to do two work outs in one day! Good for you! I've tried to split it up, but there's always something else to do. And I'm just plain tired to work out in the afternoon.

Congrats Gayle on becoming a SAHM. My dh and I have been debating if I should go back to work or do a work at home thing. I probably wouldn't be able to work out much then.

I guess I should stick with the early morning thing. Maybe I could start an hour later. I don't know about you, but my kids get up earlier on the weekends than they do during the week. My dh and I can't figure that one out.

Lori, you're so lucky your 2 year old takes a reliable nap. My little guy is not on any kind of nap schedule. He's sleeping right now and my other kids are at karate. So, I guess I better go make dinner before the chaos begins again.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I guess I'll just have to experiment to see what works. 5 more days of school! :)

Sorry so long!

If my kids are home and I need to work out, they know that they are not to interrupt me unless it is a life-threatening situation. It also helps that they are now 9 and 12 and don't need constant entertainment. They also know that if I have to stop a workout to break up a fight they are in deep, deep trouble.

Lois,

Yep, not at that point yet! Someday, but I don't want to rush it.

Well, they've also finally gotten that if I work out, I'm much less crabby and much more ready to do fun stuff with them afterwards.

Like always, I'll exist AROUND his schedule. I'm actually thinking of exercising early in the morning (although it's very hard for me to weight train that early) so the rest of the day can go smoothly. Otherwise, I'll have to wait for the hubby to come home from work so he can watch our boy while I work out. Well... whatever it takes.;-)
