Question about Spinning

Cathlete
I am so excited I am all signed up for a spinning class this Saturday.

Can you all tell me what to expect I have never been in or seen a class? What to wear? She just told me a lot of water and to come a few minutes early to set up my bike.

Next question My mom is coming to the class as well she does not workout nowhere like we do here What tips should I be looking for for her.

Thanks So much.

If you have a good instructor, expect to SWEAT!!!!
The rest kind of depends on how the instructor teaches - if there are lots of hills, jumps, sprints, etc. I've found a good instructor makes the classes great fun, while a not-so-good instructor really irritates me and makes the classes boring/unenjoyable.
I haven't done spinning in a while, as I gave up my gym membership for Cathe, but really enjoyed spinning once I got my endurance up enough. The music makes it very fun and motivating. And results can be seen fast! Just be prepared to really work.
If your mom doesn't work out a lot, the class may be a bit much for her. She should plan to just pedal along when she needs to.

Spinning is the only thing that I miss about not belonging to a gym! I LOVE SPINNING!! I wasn't in very good shape the first time I took a spin class, but somehow, I got through it. After a while, I was doing it at least three times a week. I got some really great thigh muscles that I never had before or since.

My only warning...your crotch is going to hurt for a few days. Maybe invest in a bike seat pad if you have one or if you think you might do it a lot(even with that, the first couple of times you still may hurt "down there!")x(

Enjoy!

The great thing about spinning is that you can tailor each workout to meet your needs for that day. If you want to go all out - pedal fast and furious and use a high tension setting for the hills. If you want an easier workout, you can coast through a class. Your mom will do well as long as she understands she should work at her level - not try to compete with everyone there.

I recommend long pants or capris for your first few classes until you figure out how the seat hits you. But your normal workout clothes are fine. Often times the gyms have gel seats to loan out - you can ask your instructor - but regardless, you're tail will be sore for a few days. Be prepared for that. It'll get better each time you spin - and believe me - if you spin again while it's still sore - your butt will go numb after about five minutes.

Enjoy - it's a fun class!!

I think everyone has pretty much said it already, but I had to add that I LOVE spin, too!! It is one of the great reasons I am part of a gym. I love a killer spin workout. I do it usually 1-2 weekly.

Brian: Peter, those are Cheerios.

I love spinning classes too. Yes your BUTT will be sore for a few days, but what bothered me the most was the foot cages , how you position your feet in the cages and tighten up the straps, after my first spinning class my feet hurt, maybe because you only use half your foot to pedal, I am not sure why mine hurt, where as the next person was fine, but after my first class, I went straight to the bicycle store and bought a pair of cycling shoes!! With the cycling shoes, I felt much better. As long as I have my seat cushion, and my cycling shoes, I can spin and be comfortable. If you decide you like spinning after a few classes, maybe you can get a pair of cycling shoes. Bring lots of water.

Thanks everyone. I do not belong to this gym they let non memebrs pay 7.00 per class. We are going to do it every Saturday.

I am going for new shoes tomoorw cross-training for home and gym use only.

I will let you know how the class goes.

Don't be afraid to ask the instructor to help you set your bike up correctly. I did this and just wrote my settings down so that I would have them for the next time.

I haven't done spinning in years and I always miss it! Once I started having kids it was next to impossible to get to a gym - which is where Cathe came in!

Anyway, I just remember my crotch killing me for a few days after my first class and really being blown away the first few workouts. If you have a good instructor it will be an experience like you've never had before!

Hope you have fun! This makes me want to pull out my spinning shoes again!

I love Spinning too!! It is the only reason that I joined our local YMCA and the only reason I stay (esp. in Jan. LauraMax!) The only tip that I got when I started was to stay back on the seat on my sit(?) bones. My rear-end was sore, but my crotch was not.

I really like the fact that everyone can work at their own level and that you can ride hard when you feel strong and maybe not push so hard on other days. It has really improved my endurance and running without impacting my joints.

Have fun.

I picked up golfing towels. I could not find any others except a 16.00 chamois kind at the Sporting shop.

I got a big container for my water. I am assuming you must have a spot to be able to put it.

I got cross-trainer shoes at MC Sports. Nike for $39.99.

I can not wait I will let you all know my experience when I get done.

Make sure your workout pants are not too loose, as they can get caught up while spinning!

I really recommend getting a pair of spinning shoes - they have very hard soles and really help you get a more effective workout. If they spinners at the gym have clips, that is even better! You can get clips to screw on the bottoms of your shoes and that helps you to work quads and hamstrings more, plus you don't have to worry about your foot slipping out of the stirrups. Just make sure you tuck in your laces and have a towel and water handy! Spinning is great; I was an instructor for a couple of years and miss it like crazy. It is the best leg workout around! :)

Have fun!!! :D

Pink Fortitude: Thank you for this tip on shoes. I will know more what you are describing tomorrow when I get to the class. If I like the class which I am sure I will I will invest in a pair to keep in my bag.
