question about muscle soreness

I am trying to get back in shape so I started running yesterday. My legs, esp. my thighs are very sore. I want to start weights too but I wasn't sure if I could lift weights with sore muscles. Could I continue doing cardio 30min 4x a wk and lift wts a couple times a wk even if I have sore muscles? Or would I be better off doing my cardio and instead of wts do exercises without wts to start off with? I just can't decide if I should try to work through this soreness or let my muscles rest. Please give me any advice you can.

Hi Beth...as a runner...I'd say not to do wieghts until the soreness from running goes away. I don't know if you are just starting to run or if you have for some time? You could concentrate on upper body weights and abs until the legs feel better from running. I'd think running 3 times a week right now might be best. Have you thought of any other cardio? Like kickboxing or step?...:)..Carole
