Question about Deadlifts

Another Slow and Heavy inspired question LOL...

On Pyramid Lower Body there are deadlifts to workout the glutes and hamstrings... on Gym Style Legs there are Deadlifts for the same reason... on Slow and Heavy its apart of the back workout. I know the back works in conjunction for this exercise but I really think it is secondary-- this is more of a leg/but thing then a back thing. I'm just suprised because the back workout is so short, I would think there is another exercise for the back?

Please let me know what you think! :)

Deadlifts (the way they are done in Cathe workouts) are primarily leg exercises. They do work the lower back isometrically (and as you say, secondarily).

Full deadlifts (lifting with a bent leg from the floor) work the back a bit more actively.

I recommend adding another back exercise (and/or eliminating a chest exercise, or even two!, since chest is often overworked, and back get short shrift).

I'd do 1-arm rows (with back supported, to lift heavier without back strain) or barbell rows. Or, most definitely, some upper back work (I haven't done S&H for so long, I can't remember if there are rear flyes, which work rear delt and some upper back as well) or not. Or even 1-arm rows with different hand positions (palms in, palms back).

I like the idea of doing the one arm db rows to go heavier (I can do 25 lbs when one at a time and 50lbs with a barbell underhand row-- but dumbell double row and I can only do like 25 total-- aggrivating--I feel like I'm not getting a proper workout)and then doing underhand rows instead of the deadlifts-- I'm going to add the deadlifts to the leg days and those fry my hamstrings so I won't feel the need for more leg work throughout the week. There are backflys in the shoulder workout (they aren't really rear flys but similar and you hit that same area with them).

Thanks for all your help Kathryn!! :) If you think of anything else, please let me know!

:)
